Rough Road For Bulls in Weekend MAC Matches
The University at Buffalo men's tennis team opened Mid-American Conference play over the weekend with a pair of road matches. In a rematch of last season's MAC Tournament championship match, the Bulls fell at Western Michigan, 7-0, on Friday. UB traveled to Toledo on Sunday, dropping a 5-2 decision to the Rockets. UB is 5-6 overall and 0-2 in league play.
Starakiewicz and Zenaty Earn Doubles Wins
UB number one tandem of Wojciech Starakiewicz and Mitch Zenaty scored a pair of wins in their matches against Western Michigan and Toledo. In Friday's match with the Broncos, Starakiewicz and Zenaty won in a 10-7 tiebreaker over Western Michigan's brother combination of Michael and Thomas Calderone. The duo knocked off Toledo's Aleksandar Elezovic and Sven Burus by an 8-5 margin on Sunday. As a team, Starakiewicz and Zenaty are 5-3 in the number one slot while individually, Zenaty has now tied for the team lead with Vusa Hove with 13 doubles wins.
Kalinin, Simon Defeat Toledo Opponents
In UB's 5-2 loss at Toledo on Sunday, a pair of Bulls took singles matches. At number four, Alex Kalinin needed three sets to dispose of Mircea Dimofte, 6-4, 5-7, 7-5. In the number five match, Jason Simon defeated Gursher Harika, 6-1, 6-3.
A Nickell's Worth
Head coach Lee Nickell commented following the Bulls' weekend matches. "This was a tough weekend for us, but we are resilient and will continue to fight," said Nickell. "Having George [Tibil] out has hurt us, not just tennis-wise but in terms of leadership. It's time for guys to step up and we will be back on court Tuesday to get better and work towards our match with Marist Sunday."
Red Foxes Come to Town
UB hosts the Marist Red Foxes on April 3 at the Miller Tennis Center at 10:00 am. Marist (5-2) lost to no. 69 St. John's on Sunday, 6-1. Prior to the UB match, the Red Foxes have a busy week facing Siena, Fordham, Connecticut and Niagara over the next six days.
