Bulls Take Two of Three in Palmetto State
The University at Buffalo men's tennis team traveled to South Carolina for its spring break trip and came away with a pair of wins in three matches. The Bulls downed Furman and Army by identical 5-2 scores in Greenville. The Bulls weren't as fortunate when they traveled downstate as they fell at the College of the Charleston, 6-1. UB is 5-4 as they head into Mid-American Conference play this weekend.
Mazzetto Earns MAC Player of the Week Honors
Senior Marcelo Mazzetto was honored by the MAC during the spring break trip as he earned the league's player of the week award in helping the Bulls knocked off Furman. Mazzetto teamed with Travis Zappia for a 9-7 win over the Paladins' Joel Cook and Alex Christ. He also scored a 7-5, 6-7 (5), 6-3 win over Andrei Chvetsov in the number three singles match. Mazzetto also defeated Army's Rommel Verano, 6-1, 6-1, in UB's 5-2 win over the Black Knights. In the finale at the College of Charleston, he teamed with Zappia for an 8-5 doubles win over Stephen Hardy and Tom Delme.
The Student Bests the Master
Last week's match at Furman marked a reunion for UB head coach Lee Nickell with Furman coach Paul Scarpa. Nickell played for Scarpa for four years earning three all-conference honors in his time with the Paladins. The Bulls picked up two doubles wins and won the bottom four of six singles matches to defeat their Southern Conference foe, 5-2.

Returning to Western New York following the three-match trip, head coach Lee Nickell commented on his team. "This spring break was exactly what we needed to see where we stand prior to the MAC," said Nickell. "We found an identity and really competed well through every match."
Broncos and Rockets on This Week's Schedule
The Bulls open Mid-American Conference play this weekend when they travel to Western Michigan and Toledo. UB knocked off both the Broncos and Rockets by 4-3 scores in Buffalo when the teams met in the 2010 regular season. The meeting with Western Michigan on Friday will be the first time since the Broncos defeated the Bulls in the MAC Championship match last May in Muncie, IN. The Bulls advanced to the championship match after defeating Toledo, 4-1, in the semifinal round.
