Bulls Enjoy Success in Home Opener
The University at Buffalo men's tennis team played a home match for the first time in the 2011 season on Sunday morning scoring a 6-1 victory over Youngstown State at the Miller Tennis Center. The Bulls were scheduled to host Chicago State on Saturday, however, the Cougars were unable to travel to Buffalo forcing the match to be postponed. No announcement has been made on a makeup date.
Doubles Starts Slowly, Rallies For Three Wins
After starting the doubles matches slowly, the Bulls were able to sweep all three contests to take the 1-0 lead. The number three duo of Alex Kalinin and Marcelo Mazzetto, playing together for the first time this season, fell behind Rodrigo Campos and Rob Emig by a 4-2 count before rallying for the final six points to take an 8-4 win as they were the first doubles tandem to finish. With the victory, Kalinin remains unbeaten when playing doubles at 8-0. The Bulls then clinched the point as George Tibil and Vusa Hove, at number two, downed Max Schermin and Zeeshan Ismail, 8-2. Hove improved to 12-1 in his doubles matches this season with the win. UB completed the sweep as number one duo Wojciech Starakiewicz and Mitch Zenaty rallied from a 3-2 deficit to down Tariq Ismail and Felipe Rosa, 8-3.
Starakiewicz Endures Pair of Long Tiebreakers
UB junior Wojciech Starakiewicz gutted out a grueling pair of tiebreakers to down Tariq Ismail on Sunday. Starakiewicz earned his fourth straight dual win in the number one slot with an 11-9 first set and 10-8 second set tiebreaker victory. Starakiewicz is 9-3 in singles play in 2010-11.
A Week of Rest Followed by a Trip to Cornell
The Bulls are idle this week. UB will travel to Cornell for their next match on Saturday, March 12 at 2:00 pm. The Bulls have fallen to the Big Red by 4-3 scores in each of their past three meetings (2007, 2008, 2010), all in Ithaca. "Cornell will be a strong challenge for us but we are looking forward to it," commented UB head coach Lee Nickell. "We know it will be an exciting competition."
