Bulls Rally Past Duquesne, Fall at Penn State
After splitting matches against oppostion from the state of Rhode Island to open the spring season, the University at Buffalo men's tennis team split its matches against teams from the Keystone State with a 4-3 win over Duquesne on January 30 and a 5-2 loss at Penn State on February 13. The Bulls are 2-2 overall as they prepare for their home weekend matches in two weeks.
Tibil and Hove Combine For Doubles Wins
The doubles pairing of George Tibil and Vusa Hove won both of their matches against the Dukes and Nittany Lions. Playing in the number two slot against Duquesne, Tibil and Hove clinched the doubles point for the Bulls as they downed Kyle O'Leary and Pete Carpenter, 8-5. The duo moved to the third slot for the Penn State match where they defeated Bryan Welnetz and Chris Hasyn, 8-6. Hove leads the Bulls with 11 doubles wins this season and is 4-0 in dual matches, combining with Tibil for three of the victories and Alex Kalinin in the match at Bryant.
Starakiewicz Rolls to Singles Win at Penn State
In UB's match at Penn State, Wojciech Starakiewicz won at first singles for the Bulls after sitting out the match against Duquesne two weeks earlier. The junior rolled past Eddie Bourchier in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, to remain perfect in dual meet competition this season. Starakiewicz is 3-0 in dual competition and is 8-3 overall in 2010-11. His eight singles wins this season is second to Hove's 13 triumphs.
Simon Makes Impressive Debut
Freshman Jason Simon has made an impressive debut for the Bulls this spring after joining program after attending the University of Oklahoma. Simon scored his first career victory with a 6-3, 6-2 decision over Duquesne's Steve Herchko in the number four match. Simon, playing fifth singles in the Penn State match, downed Chris Young, 6-2, 6-4.
A Nickell's Worth
Following the Penn State match, head coach Lee Nickell commented on his team's play. "This was a tough loss," said Nickell. "Penn State is more seasoned than us and it showed on big points. We had too many leads that we let go, but I was proud of the way we fought and our tenacity. It was also good to see Wojciech and Jason come up with big wins."
Home Slate Begins in Two Weeks
The Bulls open their home schedule the weekend of February 26 and 27 as they host Mid-American Conference rival Chicago State and Youngstown State. Both matches will be held at the Miller Tennis Center with the Chicago State match starting at 1:00 pm and the Youngstown State match starting at 9:00 am. This is just one of two homestands the Bulls will have during the season. UB hosts MAC rivals Ball State and Northern Illinois the final weekend of the regular season, April 22 and 24.
