Bulls End Fall Season With Pair of Titles at Cornell
The University at Buffalo men's tennis team completed the fall tournament schedule over the weekend at the Cornell Invitational at the Reis Tennis Center. There was no team scoring in the tournament with two flights of singles and doubles competition. UB swept the singles titles as Damien David and Travis Zappia won their championship matches on Sunday.
David Needs Three Sets to Take Title
Playing in the A flight championship, freshman Damien David needed three sets to defeat Cornell's Jason Luu, 6-7, 6-1, 6-2 for his 11th win of the season. It was the third straight match that David needed three sets to win. On Saturday, he scored three-set wins over Cornell's Evan McElwain and Princeton's Dan Davies. He defeated Cornell's Spencer Clark, 6-4, 6-2, in the first round on Friday.
Zappia Zaps 'Em
Travis Zappia had a relatively easier time in his B flight championship on Sunday as the sophomore knocked off Cornell's Kyle Berman, 6-2, 6-1, for the title. It was the only singles match of the weekend that Zappia did not play three sets. He opened play with victories over Cornell's Brett Cromwell and Duquesne's Rich Robbie after losing the opening set to both opponents. In his semifinal win over Lafayette's Brandon Goldstein, Zappia won the first set, 6-4, but dropped the second set by an indentical 6-4 score. He rallied for the win with a 6-3 decision in the third set. Zappia finished the fall 7-3 in singles play.
A Nickell's Worth
With the Cornell Invitational marking the end of the fall tournament season and the dual season starting in January, head coach Lee Nickell commented on the Bulls. "This is a good way to end a very productive fall," said Nickell. "Coach [Jordie] Kindervater and I feel like everyone on this team has improved, but we know we have room to grow and will be disciplined with our developmental plans as we prepare for the spring."
