Bulls Steamroll Competition at Lehigh
The University at Buffalo men's tennis team rolled to 17 victories out of 20 matches as play concluded at the Lehigh Fall Invitational. There was no team scoring and the tournament was played using a hidden duals format as the Bulls faced of with Monmouth, Lafayette, Niagara and the host Lehigh.
Staying Unbeaten
Sophomore Vusa Hove remains red hot through two tournaments during the fall. Hove swept to a singles title at the season-opening Princeton Invitational last month and scored a pair of straight-set victories against Lehigh's Matt Savran and Lafayette's Justin Haar. Hove has also teamed with Alex Kalinin to roll to five doubles wins thus far as the duo took a flight championship at Princeton. Kalinin's only blemish to his 5-1 singles record so far is a 6-4, 6-3 loss to Hove when the two played in Buffalo to decide the flight title of the Princeton tournament.
Say Hello to the Newbies
New to the Bulls this season as a pair of freshmen who got their first taste of collegiate action at the Lehigh Invitational. Travis Zappia signed with the Bulls in May from McKinney, TX while the Bulls also added Jason Shkodnik, a Brooklyn, NY native who played his high school tennis in Bradenton, FL. At Lehigh, Zappia went 2-0 in singles while Shkodnik paired with Kristof Custers to go 3-0 in doubles.
Regionals Begin This Week
The Bulls will be sending five players to this weekend's ITA Regional Championships in New Haven, CT. Wojciech Starakiewicz, George Tibil, Marcelo Mazzetto and Vusa Hove will play in the singles portion of the tournament. The Bulls will also field a pair of doubles combinations as Mitch Zenaty and Mazzetto will form on team with Starakiewicz and Tibil as the other.
