
Bulls Set Personal Records & Win Medals on Day One of MAC Indoor Championships

YPSILANTI, Mich. – The University at Buffalo track and field program competed in day one of the Mid-American Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships at Eastern Michigan on Friday. The Bulls sit in fourth on the men's side with a score of 25 after day one, trailing first-place Akron by just nine points. The Buffalo women hold 10th with a score of 11.
DISTANCE
The Buffalo men won the men's distance medley relay to close out the first night of competition. The Bulls team of Vincent Guaresimo, Fernando Sanchez, Aidan Norris, Collin Stafford and Kevin Sherry finished with a time of 10:00.84. Buffalo's school record in the event is 9:47.77.
The Bulls finished fourth in the women's distance medley relay. The team of Allison Newton, Johanna Kleiner, Bronagh Cassidy and Sina Erhardt finished the event in 11:52.98.
Luke Stoeffler brought home bronze for the second straight year at MAC Indoor Championships with a time of 14:49.75 to finish third in the men's 5,000-meter. Matt Gensel trailed to take fourth for the Bulls too with a time of 14:59.88. Freshman Connor Domoy also competed for Buffalo, finishing eighth with a time of 15:21.99.
Kleiner finished 12th in the 400-meter with a time of 58.60. On the men's side, Fernando Sanchez took ninth (50.06) and freshman Rylee VanAlstine finished 10th (50.44).
SPRINTS
Tal Hamel (7th, 6.89) and Jermaine Ewers (8th, 7.00) qualified for the 60-meter dash finals. Hamel was less than a tenth of a second shy of his personal record in the event (6.80) that ranks fifth all-time in UB indoor history. The finals of the event will take place on Saturday.
Hamel doubled back to finish first in the preliminary round of the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.39, punching his ticket to the finals on Saturday in a second event. Hamel was two-hundredths of a second shy of his indoor personal record (21.37) that ranks second in UB indoor history.
Michael Parks took first place in the 60-meter hurdles preliminary round with a time of 8.11 seconds. Parks will too compete on Saturday in the event finals. On the women's side, Gemma Galligani finished 14th in the women's 60-meter hurdles event with a time of 9.06, missing the finals cut of 8.73.
Sophia Sampson finished 19th in the 200-meter dash preliminary round with a time of 25.53, missing the finals cut by less than a second (24.62).
COMBINED EVENTS
Isa van Puffelen took fifth of the 11 athletes in the women's pentathlon with a new personal record score of 3,623. The freshman rose the indoor all-time UB ranks for the event, moving from ninth to seventh.
van Puffelen began the morning at MACs with a personal record time in the 60-meter hurdles of 9.18 seconds. The freshman continued the day with a personal record of 1.64 meters in the high jump and a shot put personal record of 10.14 meters. van Puffelen closed the pentathlon out with a mark of 5.38 meters in the long jump to take fifth and a first-place finish in the 800-meter (2:24.52).
After day one of the men's heptathlon, Kevin Gabalski sits in second place with a score of 2,908 points, trailing first place by just 67 points.
Gabalski began the day by tying his season-best time of 7.15 seconds in the men's 60-meter dash to finish second. The senior continued his momentum in the long jump setting a new personal record of 6.83 meters and in the shot put, taking second with a mark of 12.03 meters. Gabalski closed out day one by finishing first in the high jump with a mark of 1.88 meters.
The men's heptathlon wraps up on the morning of day two the 60-meter hurdles, pole vault and 1,000-meter run.
JUMPS
Micah Blair finished fourth in the men's long jump with a mark of 7.03 meters. Blair was two-hundredths of a meter shy of his personal record in the event (7.05m). Justin Kleppel also competed for the Bulls, finishing ninth (6.79m).
Kara Moran finished seventh in the women's long jump with a mark of 5.76 meters. The sophomore was just over a tenth of a meter shy of her personal record, which ranks fifth in UB indoor history. Uma Bhattacharjee also competed for the Bulls, posting a new personal record with a mark of 5.66 meters to finish ninth. The sophomore was five-hundredths of a meter shy of reaching the UB indoor record book (5.71m)
THROWS
Loretta White finished 10th of 22 throwers in the women's weight throw with a new personal record mark of 16.87 meters.
Kenneth Gulloso posted a new personal record in the men's weight throw with a mark of 16.90 meters to place sixth. Gulloso continues to near indoor record book territory, with the tenth-ranked mark in indoor history being 17.12 meters.
