
Parks Breaks School Record as Bulls Shine at Geneseo Early Season Invite

GENESEO, NY – The University at Buffalo track and field program competed at SUNY Geneseo's Early Season Invite on Friday and Saturday. The Bulls made the most of the local meet, with Michael Parks setting a new school record in the 110-meter hurdles. The program had three more all-time top 10 performances and won 11 events.
SPRINTS
Parks headlined Saturday for the Bulls, winning the men's 110-meter hurdles with a new school record time of 13.95 seconds. Parks posted a time of 14.20 in his season debut last week at the Raleigh Relays, improving his time by nearly three-tenths of a second. The senior's time surpassed Ryan Billian's school record of 13.96 seconds, which had stood since 2017. Parks also earned first place in the preliminary round of the event (14.36). Brady Hughes qualified for the finals of the event (8th, 15.97) but didn't compete in the finals heat.
Krista Perry won the 100-meter hurdles with a personal best time of 14.36 seconds. The Bulls had the top three finishers in the finals, with Olga Skolasinska taking second (14.41) and Isa van Puffelen in third (14.83). Skolasinska (2nd, 14.63), van Puffelen (4th, 14.73) and Perry (5th, 14.74) all qualified for the 100-meter hurdles finals by placing top eight in the field of 24 runners.
Shannon Schmieder won the women's 100-meter with a time of 12.49 seconds. The time was a new personal best for the sophomore, surpassing her previous best in the event of 12.63 seconds. Alexia Jones finished 13th with a time of 12.97 seconds and Skolasinska placed 22nd (13.23).
Schmieder doubled back to earn another event win, taking first place in the 200-meter with a time of 25.48 seconds. Stepheny Pryce finished seventh in the event (25.88) to earn another top 10 placement for the program. Jayne Williams (12th, 26.36) and Jones (17th, 27.07) also earned top 20 finishes in the field of 46 runners.
Pryce earned a third-place finish in the women's 400-meter with a time of 58.22 in the field of 24 runners. Pryce was just over two-tenths of a second shy of her personal best in the event (58.01). Williams (5th, 59.34) and Sina Ehrhardt (8th, 1:00.24) also earned top 10 placements.
On the men's side of the 400-meter, Aidan Norris (5th, 48.67) and Fernando Sanchez (6th, 49.19) earned top 10 finishes. Norris' time was within a second of joining the UB outdoor record book (48.16). Sanchez later placed 15th in the 200-meter with a time of 22.34. Kala'i Makanani (22nd, 22.67) and Norris (31st, 23.40) also competed for the Bulls.
In the men's 100-meter, Mitch Diamond (3rd, 10.87) and Parks (5th, 10.92) earned top-five placements. Diamond was within a tenth of a second of the first-place finisher (10.82) and within three-tenths of a second shy of the program's all-time top 10 (10.61).
Rylee VanAlstine competed in the men's 400-meter hurdles for the Bulls, placing fifth of 16 sprinters. VanAlstine finished the event in 55.23 seconds, just over two-tenths of a second shy of his personal record in the event (55.00) that ranks 10th in program outdoor history.
The Buffalo women finished second in the 4x100-meter relay. Petrina Zborovszky, Schmieder, Williams and Pryce combined to map the track in 49.15 seconds.
The Buffalo men earned second in the 4x400-meter relay to close out the day on the track. Huebner, Gordon, Norris and Sanchez finished the event in 3:15.65.
JUMPS
Linnea Neureuther headlined the meet for the jumps program, winning the women's triple jump with a distance of 12.56 meters. Neureuther's mark was a new personal best, ranking fourth in UB outdoor history. Amari Hall also competed for the Bulls, finishing second only to Neureuther (11.59m).
Ryan Cardichon highlighted the meet for the men's jumping program, winning the men's high jump on Saturday with a mark of 2.04 meters. The height was a new outdoor personal best for the sophomore, ranking seventh in program history. Cardichon placed first of 26 competitors in the event. Hughes also competed for the program, taking sixth with a personal best mark of 1.83 meters.
Adriana Ellsworth won the women's high jump with a mark of 1.68 meters. The junior was just shy of her personal record (1.71m), taking first of 15 athletes. van Puffelen placed third in the event (1.58m).
Diamond and Nicalis Williams made their debut in the men's long jump for the outdoor season. Diamond placed sixth in the field of 35 athletes with a mark of 6.44 meters. Williams finished 15th with a distance of 6.16 meters.
THROWS
Stella Kapp headlined Friday for the Bulls, opening the meet with a win in the women's javelin throw and a new personal record of 37.43 meters. Kapp's mark earned the 10th spot in UB outdoor history. The sophomore won the event of 29 competitors.
Loretta White won the women's hammer throw on Friday, taking first place in a field of 34 throwers. White's mark of 51.20 meters was a new personal best. Faith Hamilton finished 13th, posting a distance of 42.42 meters. Bernice Balk made her debut in the event, finishing 19th (39.04m).
Kenenth Gulloso earned a season-best mark in the men's hammer throw, finishing the event with a distance of 55.58 meters. Gulloso placed second of 35 throwers in the event.
Bryson Bodner continued the Bulls' momentum on Saturday, posting a personal record of 16.41 meters in the men's shot put to place second of 39 competitors. Dominic Weatherly also earned a top 10 placement, taking seventh (14.06m).
Maria Akalonu (6th, 35.49m) and Balk (7th, 35.20m) earned top 10 placements in the women's discus throw field of 26 student-athletes. Balk's mark was a new personal best.
Akalonu doubled back to win the women's shot put with a mark of 12.65 meters. Balk (4th, 11.92m) and Krista Perry (5th, 11.88m) earned top-five placements in the field of 33 throwers. White (10th, 11.17m) and van Puffelen (13th, 10.52m) also finished top 15.
On the men's side of the discus throw, Bryson Bodner earned ninth (38.94m) and Dominic Weatherly placed 11th (38.08m). Bodner's mark was a personal best.
DISTANCE
Ella Reilly opened day two on the track by placing fifth in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:32.55. The sophomore placed top five in the field of 20 runners.
Sophomore Meghana Reddy won the women's 1,500-meter in her debut in the event with a time of 4:40.99, placing first of 71 runners. The Bulls had four more runners place inside the top 12. Sophie Brettholtz placed second (4:41.60), Jacqueline Appenheimer earned eighth (4:44.99), Reese Wilber finished 10th (4:47.11) and Brianna Urban took 11th (4:48.64). Fiona Klingbeil (17th, 4:55.23), Leslie Villafuerte Castro (23rd, 5:01.63) and Megan Breslin (46th, 5:18.28) also competed for the program.
Brettholtz doubled back to take fifth place in the women's 800-meter with a time of 2:21.81. The time was a new personal record for the sophomore. Appenheimer also competed for the Bulls, finishing 12th (2:24.32).
Freshman Michael Huebner placed second of 89 runners in the men's 800-meter, posting a time of 1:54.10 in his debut in the event. Gabe Watson (6th, 1:55.24), Xavier Gordon (9th, 1:55.61) and Nicholas Morgan (12th, 1:56.22) also earned top 12 placements.
On the men's side of the 1,500-meter, Cameron Bogdan earned a top 10 placement. The junior finished ninth with a time of 4:02.36 in his debut in the event. Kevin Sherry placed 14th in the field of 71 runners, posting a time of 4:05.40.
Kaitlyn Edinger was the Bulls' top finisher in the women's 5,000-meter, taking third in the field of 21 runners. The junior posted a personal record time of 18:33.13, beating her previous best by over 20 seconds (18:57.60). Megan Smith (6th, 18:41.21), Ceina Ferguson (7th, 18:47.67) and Samantha Moury (11th, 19: 26.69) all earned top 12 placements and personal record times.
On the men's side of the 5,000-meter, Conor Domoy (4th, 14:59.46) and Chris Turner (6th, 15:16.52) posted top 10 placements and personal records too. Domoy surpassed his previous record by over 15 seconds (15:16.79).

UP NEXT
The Bulls continue the outdoor season next weekend, competing at two meets. The program will be split between Cornell University's Big Red Invite and Bucknell University's Bison Outdoor Classic, with both meets beginning on April 11th and continuing through April 12th.
