
Stoeffler Shines at Penn Relays as Bulls Win Eight Events at Fredonia

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo track and field program competed at two meets this past week, the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and the Blue Devil Invitational in Fredonia, New York. The Bulls made the most of both meets, with Luke Stoeffler posting a historic personal record at the Penn Relays and the program winning eight events at Fredonia.
PENN RELAYS
Stoeffler headlined for the program, posting a historic personal record performance at the Penn Relays in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Stoeffler's time of 8:56.15 beat his previous best in the event of 8:58.22, remaining at second in UB outdoor history. The senior was less than half a second shy of the program's all-time record (8:55.94). Stoeffler placed 22nd in the event and ranks fifth in the conference this season with the performance. The senior also ranks ninth in the NCAA Northeast region and 49th in the NCAA East region.

FREDONIA
The Bulls' throwing program got the meet at Fredonia started with some momentum, winning the first two events and posting several top three placements as the competition went on.
Bernice Balk won the women's shot put to begin the day, posting a personal best mark of 13.83 meters. Balk surpassed her previous best of 12.97 meters by nearly a full meter, also less than half a meter shy of the program's all-time outdoor top 10 (14.17m). Balk placed first of 20 throwers in the field. Loretta White earned third, setting a personal record of her own (11.55m). Balk added another top three placement, finishing third in the women's discus throw with a mark of 33.30 meters.
Kenneth Gulloso got it started for the men by winning the hammer throw. The senior posted a season-best distance of 56.50 meters to take first place of 16 throwers. Gulloso mark was nearly a meter shy of reaching his personal best mark of 57.68 meters, which ranks fifth in program history. On the women's side of the event, Faith Hamilton (3rd, 45.34m) and Balk (5th, 42.03m) posted top-five placements. Balk's performance was a personal record.
Bryson Bodner (2nd, 15.68m) and Dominic Weatherly (3rd, 14.91m) earned top three placements in the men's shot put. Bodner later placed seventh in the men's discus with a distance of 37.81 meters. The sophomore was just over a meter shy of his personal best in the event (38.94m).
The Buffalo women began the afternoon on the track by taking second place in the women's 4x100-meter. Stephney Pryce, Shannon Schmieder, Jayne Williams and Alexia Jones completed the event in 49.70.
McDonald (1st, 12.90) and Schmieder (2nd, 13.02) earned the top two spots in the women's 100-meter final. McDonald (1st, 12.760), Schmieder (2nd, 12.769) and Jones (6th, 13.50) all qualified for the finals round. Jones didn't compete in the event finals.
Jayne Williams (2nd, 59.96), Stephney Pryce (5th, 1:00.75) and Sina Ehrhardt (10th, 1:02.68) all earned top 10 placements in the women's 400-meter. Williams was just over a second shy of her personal record in the event (58.68). Pryce (1st, 26.63) and Williams (3rd, 26.77) doubled back to earn top three placements in the women's 200-meter dash.
On the men's side, Fernando Sanchez finished second of 21 sprinters in the 400-meter with a time of 49.45. Sanchez was just under a second shy of his personal best in the event (48.57).
Sophie Brettholtz won the women's 1,500-meter with a time of 4:49.37. Reese Wilber (2nd, 4:52.72) and Jacquie Appenheimer (3rd, 4:52.98) gave the Bulls the top three spots in the event.
On the men's side of the 1,500-meter, Nicholas Morgan won the event with a time of 4:07.04 in his debut. The freshman took first place in the field of 34 runners, beating the second-place finisher by nearly two seconds (4:08.77).
Megan Smith won the women's 5,000-meter with a time of 18:25.44. The junior was less than 10 seconds shy of her personal best time in the event of 18:19.14. Samantha Moury placed sixth with a time of 19:55.58, posting another top 10 finish for the program.
Brady Hughes (2nd, 1.80m) and Daniel Richardson (4th, 1.80m) both earned top-five spots in the men's high jump. Hughes was just shy of his personal best in the event (1.83m).
