CHICAGO – The University at Buffalo men's basketball team (3-0, 0-0 MAC) defeated the DePaul Blue Demons (2-1, 0-0 BIG EAST) on the road to improve to 3-0 on the season, 66-53. This is just the second time in their Division I era that Buffalo has started the season 3-0, the first came in 2018-19.
The 53 points allowed was Buffalo's fewest allowed against a non-conference Division I opponent since Nov. 24, 2018, when they allowed just 49 to Marist.
In his coaching career, Head Coach George Halcovage III improved to 24-1 against DePaul.
Ryan Sabol led the game in scoring as he recorded his 10th 20-point performance in his career, and second on the year. Daniel Freitag added 18 points with a team-high four assists. Freitag also snatched six boards and drew eight fouls.
Noah Batchelor was held scoreless on the night, but he had six rebounds, three assists, three steals and a game-high plus/minus of +16.
It was practically a wire-to-wire victory for the Bulls as they led for 36:40 to DePaul's 1:17.
The Bulls' defense was the story of the first half despite how well the offense played. The defense allowed just 18 points in the half, their fewest allowed since Feb. 21, 2023, when they only allowed 14 against Central Michigan. The defense turned into offense as their 11 forced turnovers turned into 11 points. DePaul shot a lean 23.1% from the floor in the half to Buffalo's 52.0%.
Buffalo's largest lead of the game came with 4:27 to go in the first half at 21 points. They utilized a 15-0 run, their largest of the season, to pad the lead.
The Blue Demons didn't surrender despite losing 36-18 at the half. They forced the Bulls to go 4-for-15 from the field to start the half as they chipped away at the deficit. DePaul cut Buffalo's lead to just two points with 7:38 remaining in regulation, but the Bulls began to pad their lead. The Bulls managed to get the lead to multiple possessions with time dwindling. In the final three minutes of action, the Bulls went 12-for-14 from the free throw line to ice the game.
