Galko’s Late Strike Leads Bulls to Win Over Canisius

BUFFALO, NY – Sophomore defender Maya Galko curled a ball off the back post for a goal in the 73rd minute to lead the University at Buffalo women's soccer team (3-0-1) to a 1-0 win over crosstown rival Canisius on Wednesday night at UB Stadium.
Both teams struggled to control and maintain possession for much of the first half. The Bulls had their first scoring chances of the game in the 30th minute as Jasmine Guerber broke free and put a ball on net that just sailed wide and then a minute later, Eva Blatz played a great through ball to Arianna Zumpano who drilled a shot on target, but Jordan Spencer made a point blank save and the game remained scoreless at the half.
The Bulls picked up the intensity out of the locker room as Sarah Woods used some fancy footwork at the top of the box to break free, but she couldn't catch all of the shot attempt as it sailed off target.
Sophomore goalkeeper Lexie Thompson wasn't tested much on the night, but she came up huge in the 66th minute as Canisius forced a UB turnover and Skylar Cornell took advantage, drilling a ball at the top right corner of the net, but Thompson made an incredible diving save to knock the ball out of play.
The UB attack rewarded the play of the backline as they finally broke free in the 73rd minute as Galko took the corner kick and curled the ball off the back post and in to give the Bulls a 1-0 lead and that would be the final.
Buffalo outshot Canisius 10-4 on the night, including a 6-3 edge in shots on goal and a 6-1 advantage in corner kick opportunities. Thompson made three saves while Spencer made five stops for the visitors. Senior midfielder Ashleigh Fortunate was named Player of the Game by the UB coaching staff for her performance in the win.
"We got completely outplayed in the first half," said head coach Shawn Burke. "We were poor, but a ton of credit to them. We knew they were going to be up for it and our players were not ready, so we were lucky to be tied at the half. But we challenged them in the locker room, and they rose to the occasion, put a lot of pressure and got the goal late. There is a lot of things we have to clean up but again, a ton of credit to Canisius who posed a lot of problems and we've got some fixing to do."
Up next, Buffalo concludes the homestand on Sunday, September 8 against Colgate at 1pm. It will be Senior Day at UB Stadium with eight student-athletes honored in a postgame ceremony, presented by the UB Office of Alumni Engagement.
