Bulls Earn Victories at UB Alumni Invitational

BUFFALO, N.Y. - The University at Buffalo track and field team hosted the UB Alumni Invitational at UB Stadium on Saturday, welcoming teams across western and central New York. The Bulls won both the men's and women's team competitions, with scores of 282 and 219 points, respectively. The annual competition was capped off with a recognition of the senior student-athletes and visiting Alumni from the program.
The women's team dominated the field events, winning every event. In the high jump, Zahra Amos claimed first place with a high of 5'5", with Zaria Fuller and Scilla Benussi taking second and third place. Senior Violet Drinkwater won the women's pole vault competition. Senior Kaylah Britt won the women's long jump in a personal best mark of 18'3.25", ranking 15th in the MAC, and senior Naiomi Meran claimed first place in the triple jump.
In the throws, graduate transfer Teasha McKoy took advantage of her last home competition by winning both the discus throw and the women's collegiate shot put. Imahni Sinclair continued her strong season, winning the hammer throw in a season's best mark of 177'11", 3rd in the MAC. The Bulls capped off the throws with a 1-2-3 sweep in the javelin, with Scilla Benussi winning, senior Christina Wende finishing 2nd, and senior Kelsey Shapiro finishing in 3rd place.
On the track, senior Lydia Lanski closed out her home meet competitions with a win in the women's 100-meter hurdles, running a season's best 14.71. Senior Patsy Iannico placed 3rd in the 400-meter hurdles, and freshman Paris Welker placed 4th in the 3000-meter steeplechase.
Also scoring for the Bulls included Naya Penn, finishing 5th place in the 100-meters in a season's best time of 12.85. In the 800-meters, Allison Newton, Allyssa Rotondo and Lauren O'Rourke claimed 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place overall. Freshman Vassi Klock placed 2nd in the 1500-meters in an exciting finishing kick.
The women's 4 x 100-meter relay squad of Travasia Singletary, Christina Wende, Kaylah Britt, and Zaria Fuller won in a season's best performance of 47.63.
The men saw equal success with several individual event wins. Ryan Buzby claimed the win in the 1500-meters with Alex Hislop and Cory Demo placing 2nd and 3rd. Sean O'Brien won the men's 3000-meter steeplechase with a strong closing kick to edge out Darion Gregory of St. Bonaventure, and Michael Parks won the 110-meter hurdles as well.
A strong second place performance was turned in by senior Jaron Meyer running a personal best time of 10.57 in the 100-meters, good for 4th All-Time in UB school history, and ranking 3rd in the MAC. Meyer was backed up by senior Chineme Ononiwu in 3rd in a personal best of 10.74, 10th in the MAC. Freshman Brandon Robinson in the 400-meters and Fernando Sanchez in the 800-meters also claimed runner-up places.
The quartet of Jean Desir, Jaron Meyer, Chineme Ononiwu, and Jermaine Ewers won the 4 x 100-meter relay in a season's best 41.59.
More event wins came in the field events, with sophomore Calvin Finger winning the men's high jump in 6'5". Dan Muccini jumped to a personal best of 22'7.25" to win the men's long jump. The trio of Jonathan Surdej, Mark Przybocki, and Quinn Smith took 1, 2, 3 in the collegiate shot put competition. Quinn Smith came back to win the discus throw, and seniors Danil Chernov and Alex McNulty took a 1-2 finish in the Javelin throw.
"This was a special day for our program. Not only did we recognize 22 senior student-athletes who competed in their last home competition, but we also welcomed back over 40 Alumni that came back to watch the meet and cheer on the Bulls," stated Head Coach Vicki Mitchell. "The conditions were not ideal for setting personal best marks, but our team brought their competitive and tough mentality. With just under three weeks to the MAC Championships, we are finding our rhythm in competition and continue to have student-athletes move up the MAC rankings."
