Bulls Finish Day One of Competition at Penn Relays, East Coast Relays

PHILADELPHIA - The University at Buffalo track and field team began competition at both the Penn Relays at Franklin Field in Philadelphia and the East Coast Relays hosted by the University of North Florida on Friday.
In the 127th running of the Penn Relays, the men's distance medley squad of Alex Hislop, Fernando Sanchez, Hans Matzal, and Evan Hilbert placed 7th of 18 teams, running 9:53.25, just behind Michigan State and Providence. The Bulls were the first New York state team to finish, ahead of Stony Brook and Siena, and beat several power-5 programs including Penn State and South Carolina.
At the East Coast Relays in Jacksonville, Florida several Bulls saw personal bests and season's bests in the first day of competition.
Sophomore Tal Hamel ran to a personal best of 21.47 in the 200-meters, placing 24th of 74 competitors. His time moves him to 7th all-time in UB school history, and 4th in the MAC. Teammate Jaron Meyer also ran a season's best of 21.66, and Jean Desir was close behind in 21.96.
In the men's shot put, Jonathan Surdej threw a season's best mark of 58'3" on his last throw to place 3rd in the 32-man field. Surdej continues to lead the MAC rankings in the event. Mark Przybocki moved up to 7th place in finals with his throw of 53'00.25", just shy of his personal best mark. Teasha McKoy placed 6th in the women's shot put with a season's best mark of 46'6", ranking 3rd in the MAC.
