MOUNT PLEASANT, MI – University at Buffalo women's soccer junior forward Arianna Zumpano scored in the 84th minute to help the Bulls walk away with a 2-2 draw against Central Michigan at the CMU Soccer Complex on Thursday night. With the result the Bulls move to 5-2-5 overall and 2-1-2 in conference play.
The Bulls struck first as Leah Wengender played a ball up the right sideline to Sarah Woods who carried it and played a perfect ball across the box to Katie Krohn and she one-timed a shot into the back of the net for her league-leading 11th goal of the season to give UB an early 1-0 lead.
Krohn was at it again in the 19th minute as she slipped the CMU pass, carried the ball up field and ripped a shot from the top of the box that missed just high by mere inches.
The Chippewas got on the board in the 31st minute as they drew Rebecca Winslow too far out and Claudia Muessig played a chip shot over her head into the back of the net to tie the game at one.
Later, the Bulls looked to answer in the 38th minute as Ashleigh Fortunate tried a quick shot on net but it curled right at Allison LaPoint who made the save and the game remained tied at the half.
UB looked to create early in the second half as Woods won a ball at midfield and plays a beautiful through ball to Katie Krohn who fires a shot across the box, but it rolled just wide of target.
Buffalo had a pair of set piece opportunities, first in 55th minute, as UB took a corner but were unable to get a shot off as they were called for offsides, and then in the 58th minute they had a free kick just outside the box but were unable to capitalize.
The Chippewas then took advantage in the 74th minute as they weaved through the UB defense and scored to take a 2-1 lead.
The Bulls showed poise and found the equalizer 10 minutes later off a textbook passing sequence as Ellie Simmons played a ball to Wengender at midfield who found Zumpano up the left side and she slid a shot across the box into the bottom right corner of the net to tie the game at two and that would be the final.
The Bulls outshot the Chippewas 12-6, including a 6-4 advantage in shots on goal, and a narrow 2-1 edge in corner kick opportunities. Winslow made two saves while LaPoint made three stops for CMU. Woods was named Player of the Game by the UB coaching staff.
Up next, Buffalo returns home on to host Ball State on Sunday, October 8 in a rematch of the 2022 MAC Championship.
