YPSILANTI, MI – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team (4-2-1) fell to Eastern Michigan 1-0 to open Mid-American Conference play on Thursday afternoon at Scicluna Field.
The Bulls had their first scoring chance of the game in the 14th minute as Jasmine Guerber slid a ball through to Carolyn Hinkle and she fired a shot from point blank range, but Ella Holland made a sliding save.
UB had another good look five minutes later as Laiken Kiser found Guerber who drilled a shot in stride, but Holland was there to knock it away. Later, Eva Blatz settled a ball at the top of the box and fired on target but her shot sailed high over the crossbar.
Buffalo was on the attack again in the 33rd minute as Maddy Murphy went to her right and ripped a shot at the top corner but Holland made a fantastic leaping save to knock the ball out of play and the game remained scoreless at the half.
The Eagles broke through early in the second half off a counterattack as Olivia Sipsock got past the defense and fired a shot over the outstretched hand of Lexie Thompson into the top right corner of the net to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.
Guerber looked to answer a few minutes later as she carried the ball inside the top of the box and fired a shot, but Holland knocked the ball out of play. Later, in the 59th minute, Hinkle had a pair of shot attempts blocked and then Kiser played a ball to the head of Guerber who flicked it on target, but it sailed just over the crossbar. The Bulls managed a few more shots over the final 20 minutes but were unable to capitalize as they came up just short.
Buffalo outshot Eastern Michigan 17-4 on the day, including an 8-3 advantage in shots on goal and a 6-3 edge in corner kick opportunities. Thompson made two saves while Holland made eight stops for the Eagles.
Up next, Buffalo will continue league action with a pair of home contests, beginning on Sunday, September 21 as the Bulls welcome Miami (OH) to UB Stadium for a 1pm contest. Fans are encouraged to wear purple to support the team's Alzheimer's Awareness efforts.
