Bulls Chip Away for Five Set Thrilling Win

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo women's volleyball team (15-10, 7-6 MAC) defended their home court on Saturday evening as they defeated the Central Michigan Chippewas (15-9, 8-5 MAC). The Bulls beat the Chippewas in a five set thriller, 19-25, 26-24, 17-25, 25-16, 17-15. UB improved to 9-2 at home this season with three home games remaining.
In total, there were 19 ties and six lead changes.
In today's contest, sophomore Mandy Leigh joined the 2,000-assist club. She is just the 10th Bull to do so in program history. Amy Brown (2002-05) is the school record holder with 4,349 assists. M. Leigh added a whopping 52 assists to her total for 10.40 assists per set.
At the net, the Chippewas came up huge as they had 21.0 blocks to UB's 8.0. Overall, UB out hit Central Michigan, .196 to .156.
The Bulls trying clawing their way back in the first set, but an eight point deficit at the mid-point of the set was too much. Central Michigan had an overall hit percentage of .353 with 15 kills.
In the second set, the Bulls took an 11-5 lead and sustained a healthy lead for most of the set. Despite the Chippewas only hitting .123, they fought back to tie the match at 19, 21, 22, and 24. Katrin Trebichavska closed the set with two kills with M. Leigh adding the assists.
Central Michigan had their way with UB in the third set, taking it 25-17. The Bulls struggled on the attack as they only hit .139. The Chippewas capitalized on the Bulls' struggles adding three service aces in the set.
The Bulls returned the favor in the fourth set, taking it 25-16. Central Michigan hit an abysmal .021 in the set compared to UB's .261. The 19 kills the Bulls earned was a match high as Stacia Gollogly (7) and Cali Assaley (6) led the way.
In the decisive fifth set, the Bulls won it in nailbiter fashion. After holding Central Michigan to a hit percentage of .037, they got six of their points off blocks. In what looked like a runaway with UB up 14-8, the Chippewas came all the way back and took a 15-14 lead. In the final three points, Central Michigan had an attack error, Gollogly had the kill to make it 16-15, and Olivia DeBortoli shut the door with the final kill.
In total, the Bull finished with 70 kills. Leading the charge was Assaley (17), Trebichavska (14), Gollogly (12), and Abby Leigh (11).
Regarding MAC standings, the Bulls are tied for sixth with Northern Illinois at 7-6 in conference play.
The Bulls are back in action on Friday, Nov. 4 at Miami (OH).
