Bulls Sweep Canisius, Smith Earns 100th Career Victory

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo women's volleyball team (3-1, 0-0 MAC) defeated the Canisius Golden Griffins (0-4, 0-0 Metro) in the first match of the newly named Broadview Arena in sweeping fashion on Wednesday night, 25-13, 25-21, 25-20. With the win, Head Coach Scott Smith earned his 100th career victory in his tenure at Buffalo. He's just the second coach in the program's Division I history to reach this milestone.
Hailey Campagna led Buffalo's offensive attack with 12 kills while racking up five total blocks. Abisola Adebayo set a career-high five blocks on the night. Maddie Mitchell tallied 25 assists and seven digs.
The Bulls were aggressive at the net as they finished with 13 blocks. Buffalo's offense outhit Canisius, .365 to .091. This marked the first time the Bulls limited an opponent to hit below .100 since Nov. 16. 2024, when Eastern Michigan hit .080.
SET 1 | It was all Buffalo in the first set as they hit .500 with 12 kills. They limited Canisius to a -.034 hitting percentage while forcing 13 errors. In her lone set of the night, Manoela Forlin led the Bulls with four kills as the Bulls ran away with the set, 25-13.
SET 2 | Canisius battled in the second set as there were six ties and three lead changes. Buffalo bounced back after falling in a 5-3 hole to regain a 15-13 lead at the media timeout. The Bulls' blockers tallied five blocks in the set including four of five points as they forced a Canisius timeout at 18-13. Buffalo went on to win 25-21.
SET 3 | The Golden Griffins took the first point in the third set, but that was their only lead the rest of the match. Campagna had four kills to close the set with Angelina Siepierski and Abbie Willis each had two. Buffalo closed the math with a 25-20 win.
"We were happy to get our first win in Broadview Arena and be able to have strong performances from so many different players," stated Head Coach Scott Smith. "Our blocking really shined tonight, and I felt it was a big difference maker when the sets were close, giving us the separation we needed. Part of the game plan was to keep our unforced errors under control, and we executed that well towards the end of each set. We are looking forward to the competition coming later this weekend."
The Bulls are back home on Friday at 6 p.m. against the UMBC Retrievers. Their weekend will close against Dartmouth on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Broadview Arena.
