Bulls Retrieve Five-Set Win Over UMBC on Friday Evening

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo women's volleyball team (4-1, 0-0 MAC) defeated the reigning American East Tournament Champion UMBC Retrievers (2-1, 0-0 America East) in a thrilling five-set match at Broadview Arena on Friday evening, 26-24, 25-23, 21-25, 23-25, 15-5. The Bulls have now won three straight matches.

Hailey Campagna recorded her first career double-double with 15 kills and 11 digs. She also finished with a .393 hitting percentage. Manoela Forlin and Maddie Mitchell also recorded double-doubles as the former had 16 kills and 12 digs with the latter tallying 43 assists and 10 digs. Sydney Bell had a season-high 13 kills in the win.

Chloe Brown tied her career-high in digs with 16 on the night.

The Bulls followed up their win over Canisius with 12 blocks. Over the last two matches, they've managed 25 total blocks.

SET 1 | The Bulls trailed for the majority of the set as UMBC led 15-11 at the media timeout. Trailing 20-15, Buffalo called a timeout which shifted the momentum in their favor. They tied the set at 23 off a kill from Forlin forcing a UMBC timeout. Campagna won the set with a kill as the Bulls took it, 26-24.

SET 2 | The Retrievers took an early 7-4, but this would be their largest lead in the set. Soon after, they'd call a timeout as Buffalo went on a 5-1 to take an 11-9 lead. Buffalo never looked back as they won, 25-23. The Bulls hit .273, but were edged by the Retrievers, .290.

SET 3 | UMBC never trailed in the third set as there were just three ties. The Retrievers outhit the Bulls, .321 to .222. Hannah Dobbs of UMBC highlighted the set with seven kills on 10 attempts with no errors. UMBC won, 25-21.

SET 4 | The Bulls looked as though they'd win the match in four sets as they got up early 9-5. Following a 15-11 lead at the media timeout, UMBC called a timeout trailing 20-15. The Bulls couldn't close out the set or match as the Retrievers went on a massive 10-3 run to win, 25-23.

SET 5 | It was all Buffalo in the decisive fifth set. Leading wire-to-wire, they outlasted UMBC with a 15-5 set win. UMBC called a timeout trailing 4-0, but it was too late as Buffalo's lead kept increasing. The Bulls finished with just five kills as they forced 10 errors.

"This was a quality win over a strong UMBC squad," stated Head Coach Scott Smith. "I was very pleased with how we attacked them with the serve tonight. We were able to string together runs of points with strong blocking when we needed it most, especially in the fifth set. We wanted to have a more balanced attack and keep all of the hitters involved. This was a great match to continue building confidence within our team."

Their weekend will close against Dartmouth on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Broadview Arena.
