
Pia Schwarz Advances To ITA Super Regionals

PHILADELPHIA, PA – The University at Buffalo women's tennis team had a successful weekend at the ITA Northeast Regionals on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania, highlighted by the singles performance from Pia Schwarz, who advanced to the ITA Super Regionals.
Six Bulls entered the singles bracket of the ITA Regionals, which began with the Round of 128 and matches were played until the final eight were determined, who move on to the Super Regionals. Schwarz received a first round bye and then won her first match in the round of 64, 6-0, 6-0. She continued her run by beating Michelle Sorokko of Princeton in the next round, 6-1, 7-6 (4), and then on Sunday she matched up with Ariana Gumerova of Seton Hall, winning, 6-1, 2-6, 10-8.
Hsin-Yuan Shih also made it to Sunday's action as she won her first two matches over the weekend. Shih also received a first round bye and then won her next match 6-4, 6-0. She moved on to defeat Jackeline Lopez of Rutgers 6-4, 6-4, but then on Sunday was matched up with Stephanie Schrage of Princeton, one of the top players in the region, and she ultimately bowed out of the tournament, 6-1, 6-0.
Gabriella Akopyan won her first match of the weekend 6-1, 6-4 before losing in the Round of 64. Nikoleta Antoniou-Karademitrou also won her first match 6-2, 6-3. Azra Deniz Comlek won her first two matches in the singles competition with a 6-1, 7-6 (4) victory in the opening round followed by a 6-1, 6-2 win over Amanda Chan from Penn, who was ranked within the top 16 in the region. She lost in the Round of 32 in a three-set match. Ambre Amat also competed in the singles bracket, dropping her first match of the tournament.
In doubles action, Schwarz and Antoniou-Karademitrou had a big weekend making it all the way to Sunday's action. They received an opening round bye in the field of 64 and then scored an easy 8-1 win in the second round. They would then defeat Tess Fischer and Jackeline Lopez of Rutgers 8-7 (5) before losing to Sabine Rutlauka and Amanda Chen of Penn, one of the top four seeds, 8-5.
Akopyan and Amat won their opening match in doubles 8-7 (3) but lost in the round of 32 as did Comlek and Shih, who won their opening match 8-5.
With her top eight performance, Schwarz will move on to the ITA Super Regionals, which will begin in two week at Princeton.
