BUFFALO, NY – University at Buffalo head men's basketball coach Jim Whitesell announced the addition of junior college standout Malik Zachery on Wednesday. Zachery comes to the Bulls after playing at Chipola Junior College, the same school as Antwain Johnson.
Zachery is a 6-2 guard out of Syracuse, who played his high school ball at West Genesee High School and a season of prep school basketball at Commonwealth Academy in Springfield, MA. He then went to Chipola where he played his entire freshman season before earning a medical redshirt after playing in just four games last season. He has three years of eligibility at Buffalo.
"We are very excited to have Malik join us," said Whitesell. "He comes from one of the best junior college programs in the country in Chipola. Malik is very unselfish, and I really like his toughness. He will compliment our style of play well. With his strong playmaking and all-around game, we think he can really have an outstanding career at UB. We are always happy when we can add players from New York State, and we got one of the best in Malik."
Zachery played in 32 games as a freshman at Chipola, starting 31 of those contests. He averaged 8.5 points, 3.9 rebounds and 5.8 assists per game during the season, shooting just under 46% from the field. He scored a season-high 19 points against Pensacola State, where he also added 10 assists and seven rebounds. He recorded double figures in assists four times during the year.
Zachery joins freshman Chanse Robinson, who signed with Buffalo during the early signing period in November.
