BUFFALO, NY – University at Buffalo Athletics and the National Grid Foundation are proud to once again team up with Buffalo City Schools for Hoops for the Stars. In an effort to maintain social distancing, this year's program has been reimagined to connect men's and women's basketball student-athletes, coaches and administrators virtually with inner city youth for the purpose of promoting literacy, learning and nutrition.
This year's participating elementary schools are PS 32 Bennett Park Montessori School, PS 94 West Hertel Academy, PS 192 Buffalo Academy for Visual and Performing Arts, PS 67 Discovery School and the Buffalo United Charter School.
Each participating elementary school will partake in a virtual chat engaging UB men's and women's basketball student athletes and staff with Buffalo Public school students who exhibit positive behaviors as recognized by their teachers. UB Athletics will also produce a series of educational videos to be shared with students addressing virtual learning, the importance of exercise, social distancing and teamwork.
"While this year has presented some challenges for educational communities, the National Grid Foundation is so pleased with the creativity and tenacity UB has demonstrated so that for the third consecutive year, we can again offer Hoops for the Stars to elementary school students in the Buffalo area," said Ed White, Executive Director, National Grid Foundation. "With the pivot in programming to virtual chats and videos, along with inspiration from UB's exceptional scholar-athletes, and recognition of the most exceptional students, we hope to continue to stimulate and motivate great academic performance."
Each school will select a "Star of the Year" who will have an opportunity to meet UB men's head basketball coach Jim Whitesell and women's head basketball coach Felisha Legette-Jack virtually.
"We are thrilled to partner with the National Grid Foundation again this year in support of Buffalo Public Schools," UB Director of Athletics Mark Alnutt said. "One of our core values is community engagement and this is a great program that gives us an opportunity to encourage and reward area students."
