BUFFALO, NY – Longtime University at Buffalo Athletics supporter Tunney Murchie passed away on Friday at the age of 73.
Murchie was a 1975 graduate of UB with a degree in management and earned his MBA from UB in 1976. He played hockey for the Bulls from 1971-73 and was an assistant coach with the program in 1974.
A self-made businessman, Murchie was owner and president of Lackawanna Products Corporation in Clarence.
Thanks to his selflessness and generosity, the Murchie name is a fixture across numerous athletic facilities on UB's campus. His philanthropy touched every program, by helping support team initiatives critical to advancing their programs.
He and his family made their first gift in 2008, a donation to UB's men's club hockey team. In 2010, they spearheaded the renovation of the Edward L. Wright Practice Facility in Broadview Arena.
In 2012, they donated for capital projects in Broadview Stadium and Broadview Arena. In July 2013, the Murchie Family Football Center was unveiled, in recognition of their generous support.
In 2016, "The Murch" completed a major expansion, adding new state-of-the-art football team meeting rooms and coaches offices. The expansion was made possible by a sizable donation from the Murchie family in 2014.
The most visible example of Murchie's generosity is the Murchie Family Fieldhouse which opened in 2019. The 92,000 square-foot indoor practice facility, situated just beyond the north end of Broadview Stadium, was made possible, in large part, by a sizable donation from the Murchie family, the largest financial gift in the history of UB Athletics.
In 2024, the Brittany Murchie Mulla Sports Performance Center was added to the west end of the fieldhouse, providing a state-of-the-art facility for student-athletes to train. The 15,000 square-foot facility doubled the size of the previous sports performance center.
Murchie was a fixture at UB sporting events and often traveled to road football games.
In 2023, he was inducted into the UB Athletics Hall of Fame. It was a lifetime achievement recognition for Murchie and his family for what they meant to UB Athletics.
Murchie is survived by his wife, Deanna, sons Scott, Brent and Nevin and daughter, Brittany.
