SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA – The University at Buffalo dropped an afternoon dual at Cal Poly, 23-10, on Saturday. It was the back end of the Bulls' two-day, two-dual west coast swing.
Derek Spann got the Bulls on the board first with a 12-5 decision over Junior Fernandez at 133. Spann used three reversals and two near falls to improve to 4-1 in duals on the year.
After the Mustangs won the next three bouts by decision, Troy Keller tried to start a rally for the Bulls. The senior 165-pounder won a 5-3 decision over Bernie Traux to cut the Cal Poly lead to 12-6. A third-period reversal by Keller was the difference in the match.
Jake Lanning followed with a 12-1 major decision over Nathan Trausch at 174 to cut the Mustangs' lead to 12-10 with three matches remaining. Three takedowns and numbers stall points allowed Lanning to pull away for the win.
However, Cal Poly would get the better of the Bulls in all three of the final matches to pull away for the 23-10 victory.
"It was a tough weekend for sure," head coach John Stutzman said. "We lost matches because of the little things and that continues to cost us."
The Bulls will return home to host new Mid-American Conference member Cleveland State on December 6 at Alumni Arena.
