
Bulls Drop Close Dual with Cleveland State, 19-17

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo wrestling team dropped a tight dual with Cleveland State, 19-17, at Alumni Arena on Friday night. The Vikings won the last two matches of the night to escape with the two-point victory.
Derek Spann got the Bulls on the board first with a 21-2 technical fall victory over Justin Patrick at 133 lbs. Spann used three four-point nearfalls to improve to 5-1 in duals on the season.
After the Bulls fell behind, 10-5, John Arceri earned a 3-0 decision over Gus Sutton to cut the Vikings' lead to 10-8. Arceri did all of his scoring in the third period with a takedown and the riding time point.
Michael Petite followed with a win a 157 lbs. Petite, wrestling in his first career dual, earned a takedown in the closing seconds of the match to pull out the 6-4 victory and put the Bulls ahead, 11-10.
At 165, Troy Keller won a 7-3 decision over Riley Smucker. Smucker got an early takedown, but it was all Keller after that as the senior improved to 5-1 in duals with the win.
After Cleveland State won at 174, to cut the UB lead to 14-13, Pete Acciardi earned a thrilling decision at 184 to put UB ahead, 17-13. Tied, 1-1, late in the match, Acciardi earned a takedown with just five seconds left to pull out the 3-1 decision.
However, the Bulls dropped bouts at both 197 and 285, allowing Cleveland State to escape with the 19-17 win.
The Bulls are back in action on Sunday afternoon at West Virginia.
