Bulls Split Duals Against Gardner-Webb and Kent State

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo wrestling team split a pair of duals at Alumni Arena on Saturday afternoon. The Bulls rallied to beat Gardner-Webb in the opener before falling to Kent State in the nightcap.
In their opener against Gardner-Webb, the Bulls fell behind the Bulldogs, 15-0, before mounting a furious comeback.
Sam Ewing got things started with an 11-1 major decision at 149. The redshirt-sophomore was able to get a takedown in the closing seconds of the match to turn a decision into a major.
Trailing, 19-4, the Bulls rattled off three straight wins.
At 165, Kelin Laffey was leading Tucker Cell, 5-0, before Cell sustained an injury and had to forfeit.
Rafael Knapp followed with a 9-4 decision at 174 to cut the Bulldog lead to 19-13.
Marcus Petite brought the crowd to its feet when he was able to pin Haydn Danals in the first period. Petite's pin, at the 2:10 mark, brought the Bulls all the way back to tie the match at 19-19.
Trailing, 22-19, Magnus Bibla was the Bulls' last hope. The junior, wrestling in his first dual of the season, responded with a 4-2 decision over Rocky Files. Bibla's first-period takedown was the difference in the match.
Bibla's decision tied the dual at 22-22. Buffalo's two six-point wins gave the Bulls the win on criteria.
The Bulls fell to Kent State, 22-10, in their second dual.
The Golden Flashes won the first five matches of the dual before Kelin Laffey got the Bulls on the board. UB's 165-pounder earned an 8-0 major decision over Ty Deericks.
Petite earned a hard-fought 2-1 decision over Trent Thomas at 184 for his second win of the day.
Bibla also won twice on the day with a 9-3 decision over Corey Boerio at 285.
The Bulls are back in action next Sunday when they wrestle NC State, The Citadel and George Mason in Raleigh, NC next Sunday.
