BUFFALO, NY – At first glance at the box score, the University at Buffalo women's soccer team seemed to be in control of things in their match against Miami (OH) at UB Stadium on Friday night. The Bulls had the advantage in shots, corner kicks and time of possession while limiting the RedHawks to just two shots on goal but unfortunately for the Bulls, one of those two shots proved to be the difference in a 1-0 Miami win.
The Bulls fall to 4-5-1 on the year, 1-2 in the MAC, while Miami improved to 3-7 overall, 2-1 in league play.
The Bulls had plenty of chances in the first half starting with a shot from Carley Zoccali from the top of the box in the sixth minute that sailed just high through the uprights. UB had another good look in the 23rd minute as Kaitlyn Walsh Katherine Camper had back-to-back looks from inside the box but both were turned away by the Miami defense.
The game remained scoreless until the 63rd minute when Lyda Bogdanovitch played the ball back to Jordan King who then found Olivia Winnett up field on the breakaway and she flicked it over the head of Emily Kelly into the net to put Miami up 1-0.
Buffalo had a couple good looks to tie the game, first in the 70th minute as Leah Wengender and Marcy Barberic both ripped shots on net but the RedHawks defense cleared the attempts away. Later, in the 75th minute, Gianna Yurchak drilled a ball from point blank range but Izzie Vaccari stood tough to make one of her nine saves on the night.
In total the Bulls outshot Miami 24-4, including a 9-2 edge in shots on goal, while also holding the advantage in corner kicks, 9-1. Barberic led the Bulls with five shots on the night. Sophomore Abbey Callaghan was named Player of the Match by the UB coaching staff.
"Our lack of discipline tonight was our demise," said head coach Shawn Burke. "We had really good spells and dominated the first half but we let them back in and didn't execute and individual errors cost us the game."
Buffalo returns to UB Stadium on Sunday to host Ball State at 12pm where the Bulls will be honoring the 2014 MAC Championship team in a pre-game ceremony.
