EVANSTON, IL – The Mid-American Conference Champion University at Buffalo women's tennis team placed four individuals on the Academic All-MAC Team, the conference office announced on Friday morning. The four honorees tie Toledo and Western Michigan for the most of any team in the league.
The team is highlighted by first-team All-MAC selection Chantal Martinez Blanco, who earned Academic All-MAC honors for a second straight season. She has just under a 3.8 GPA while majoring in economics and was named an All-MAC First Team selection after earning second team honors each of the last two years. Martinez Blanco is 23-7 this season, including going 12-5 at first singles and 7-1 during conference play. She is 19-7 in doubles action, including going 6-4 at first doubles for the MAC Champions.
Junior Mercedes Losada Rubio also makes the Academic All-MAC squad for the second straight year, while she continues to pursue her degree in management. Losada Rubio has been a key reserve for the Bulls as she spent time at fifth and sixth singles for UB. She also has a 7-4 mark in doubles, including going 3-1 with teammate Arianna Paules Aldrey at third doubles.
Sophomore Anna Savchenko finds her way on to the Academic All-MAC team for the first time as she is majoring in English. Savchenko has been one of UB's top doubles players as she is 20-9 at second doubles with teammate Anna Savchenko. They are 10-2 at second doubles and 3-3 at first doubles. In singles action, she is 11-1 for the Bulls, including a perfect 3-0 in dual competition.
The team is rounded out by junior Sanjana Sudhir, who also makes it for the second straight year. Sudhir has a GPA of just under 3.6 in economics. She holds a 20-3 singles record for the Bulls, tied for the fewest losses on the team amongst those who have played over 20 matches. She went undefeated during MAC play in singles action, as she is a perfect 9-0 at fifth singles for the Bulls.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. Freshmen and transfer students in their first year of competition are not eligible.
These four and the rest of the Bulls open up NCAA Tournament action this afternoon when Buffalo faces Northwestern in the first round of the tournament at 4pm EDT.
