Women's Soccer Drops Opener At Saint Joseph's, 3-1

PHILADELPHIA, PA - The University at Buffalo, The State University of New York women's soccer team opened up their 2015 regular season with a 3-1 road loss at Saint Joseph's on Friday night.

"We were beaten by a better and more prepared St. Joseph's team tonight," stated second-year head coach Shawn Burke. "We showed glimpses of what we are capable of, but glimpses dont win games. I do believe we have growth minded players and will be able to learn and move forward after this performance."

The Hawks got on the board just 22 seconds into the match as Dakota Mills placed a shot into the upper right corner of the net for her first career goal. Saint Joseph's extended the lead to 2-0 in the 23rd minute of play as Shannon Westhead found the back of the net after a perfect cross from Emily Gingrich.

The first half came to a close with the home team dominating play, holding the 10-3 edge in shots during the first 45 minutes of action.

As the second half started, the Bulls looked more comfortable and began creating more chances. After back-to-back yellow card to Kristin Markiewicz and Kassidy Kidd the Bulls got on the board with their first goal of the 2015 campaign.

Jackie Hall started the play with a great free kick attempt that was saved and forced out of bounds, giving the Bulls a corner kick. On the ensuing kick, Moira Petrie sent a perfect ball into the box where Hall was able to head home her first goal of the season. Petrie earned her first career point for the Bulls with the perfect assist.

Saint Joseph's responded quickly, making it 3-1 in favor of the home team just a minute later. Mills' second goal of the contest put the Bulls comeback attempt to rest as the Hawks were able to hold on down the stretch and hand UB the loss.

Saint Joseph's held the 16-8 advantage in shots while the Bulls held the 5-1 lead in corner kicks. Sophomore Laura Dougall made three saves in the loss while her counterpart Allison Ebling made three saves in the victory. Hall led all Bulls with three shots while Markiewicz was the only other UB player with a shot on goal in the loss.

Buffalo (0-1, 0-0 MAC) will return to the pitch on Sunday at 1:00 pm as they will travel to take on the Drexel Dragons.
