MT. PLEASANT, MI – The University at Buffalo, The State University of New York, softball team split its doubleheader at Central Michigan on Saturday afternoon, dropping the opener 5-3 before coming back to win in the second game, 4-2. The victory was UB's first in conference play.
The Bulls dropped the opener to Central Michigan on Saturday as the Chippewas used a three-run fifth inning to break a 2-2 tie. Central Michigan scored single runs in the first and second innings to take a 2-0 lead, but the Bulls tied it up in the top of the third as senior Karly Nevez and freshman Leandra Jew both reach base to start the frame. Senior Alexis Curtiss recorded her 19th double of the season to drive in Nevez, and then Barrow fouled out to left field, but it was far enough to drive in Jew.
The Chippewas retook the lead in the fifth with three runs and the Bulls were unable to tie the game back up despite scoring one in the seventh on a run-scoring double from sophomore Savanna Norcio.
Barrow picked up the loss as she allowed all five runs, with four being earned. Barrow did strike out four CMU batters. Curtiss went 2-for-4 from the plate, while Jew went 2-for-3 from the dish.
In the second game, Central Michigan scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning, but the UB pitching staff then kept the Chippewas off the board and despite stalling early, the Bulls' offense came alive with a four-run sixth.
Jew and Curtiss led off the sixth with back-to-back singles as Barrow drove home the first run of the inning to get the Bulls on the board. Barrow then came in to score on a Central Michigan throwing error, which kept the inning going for UB.
The Bulls put two runners on base for senior Stephanie Beuther, who came on as a pinch hitter, and she delivered with a two-run double to left field, giving the Bulls a 4-2 lead. The Chippewas put runners on base in each of the last two innings, but the Bulls got a huge double play in the sixth and then a ground out in the seventh ended the game.
"We finally put all three phases of the game together in the second game," said head coach Trena Peel. "I'm so proud of Bobbi for coming on in relief strong in both games today."
Langlois picked up her fifth win of the season as she went six innings of scoreless relief and allowed just four hits and no walks while striking out two. The Bulls finished with seven hits, coming from seven different players.
The Bulls continue conference play on the road next Friday with a doubleheader at Toledo beginning at 1:00 pm.
