BUFFALO, NY - In their final warmup before the 2014 season officially begins, the University at Buffalo women's soccer team put together a complete team effort on Sunday afternoon in their exhibition match at All-High Stadium as they defeated Monroe College by the score of 5-0. UB dominated most of the play, outshooting the Mustangs 23-2 for the contest.
"I was very pleased with how we came out and played throughout the first 45 minutes," said head coach Shawn Burke. "We were able to play a lot of different players today which will only help their development as we begin the regular season on Friday."
Following a huge save by freshman Laura Dougall from in close, the Bulls transitioned downfield and were awarded their first goal of the contest off the head of Jackie Hall. Kristin Markiewicz put a perfect ball into the box off the corner kick and Hall shot through the defense and headed the ball past the Mustangs goalkeeper in the 9th minute of action.
Eight minutes later, leading returning scorer Katie Roberts got on the scoresheet as she blasted one past the outstretched arm of the keeper, making the score 2-0 in favor of the Bulls. UB closed out the half with most of the pressure in the attacking third but they were unable to come away with another goal.
With mostly Mustang reserves playing throughout the second half, the Bulls were able to prove their depth can be a strength of the team this season as they added three second half goals. Megan Abman started off the second half scoring as she buried her own second chance following a big save from the Mustangs goalkeeper. Less than a minute later, freshman Julia Benati had a fantastic individual effort to get free for a blast that went off the goalkeepers hand and into the net, making the score 4-0 in the 55th minute. Kori Hughes wrapped up the scoring for UB in the 68th minute.
Buffalo held the 12-2 advantage in shots on goal for the day and the defense proved to be stingy once again, securing their second straight shutout.
The Bulls open their 2014 regular season at UB Stadium on Friday night as 7:00 pm as they play host to Big Four foe St. Bonaventure. Friday's game will be the first game played on UB Stadium's new turf.
