BUFFALO, NY - Following one of the best weeks in her college career, junior pitcher Tori Speckman was honored by the Mid-American Conference on Monday afternoon as its East Division Co-Pitcher of the Week. The award is the first for a UB player this season and the second in Speckman's career. Ironically, both awards have come following weekend road series at Bowling Green and Toledo.
Speckman led the Bulls to a 4-2 record during six road games this past week. She went 3-1 over five appearances, not allowing a run until the seventh inning of her final appearance against Toledo on Sunday afternoon. Prior to that, Speckman had a streak of 27 straight innings pitched this past week without allowing a run. Even more impressive was the fact that Speckman was pitching mostly with just one and two run leads through out the week. She finished the stretch with a minuscule ERA of 0.24, allowing just one earned run to score. She also struck out 23 batters, while allowing a WHIP of under 1.00 at 0.92. She lowered her team-leading ERA to 2.21 and struck out a team-high 77 batters.
The 27-inning scoreless streak was the second longest in school history since the program turned Division I in 2000, just behind a 30-inning streak from upcoming Hall of Fame member Stacey Evans in 2004.
"Tori was absolutely fantastic this past week and this honor is well deserved," said head coach Jen Teague. "She took control in the circle and got ahead of hitters. Even more impressive was that she was able to do this all on the road."
Speckman and the Bulls return to action tomorrow afternoon for a doubleheader at St. Bonaventure. First pitch scheduled for 3:00 pm.
