Watson Named MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week

BUFFALO, NY – University at Buffalo men's basketball player Tony Watson has been named the Mid-American Conference's Co-Male Scholar Athlete of the Week. The league announced the weekly award winners this morning from its headquarters in Cleveland. Watson shared the weekly recogntion with Western Michigan tennis player Nadin Indre.
A senior business administration major with a 3.25 overall grade point average, Watson had the best week of his career to help lead the Bulls to two wins. He averaged 27.5 points, 2.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists and a steal in wins over Toledo and Miami and scored 55 points in the two games, including 12 three-pointers. He shot 68 percent from the field (17-for-25) and 67 percent from beyond the arc (12-of-18) and was also a perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line in the two victories. Against Toledo on Wednesday, February 13, Watson scored a then career-high 24 points, including six three-pointers and added five rebounds, two assists and a steal. After missing his first two three-pointers, Watson finished the game making 6-of-7 attempts. He topped that performance by scoring a career-best 31 points in UB's 79-71 win at Miami on Saturday, February 16. Watson was a perfect 6-for-6 from the field in the first half, including 4-for-4 from beyond the arc. For the game, Watson shot 10-of-14 from the field and 6-of-9 from three. He scored UB's final five points of the game to help the Bulls pull away for the victory.
For his efforts on the court, Watson was also selected as the MAC East Division Co-Player of the Week on Monday afternoon.
Watson is the third UB athlete to receive the league's weekly academic honor in the 2012-13 school year. Football player Colby Way earned the recognition on September 5, 2012 while Watson's teammate Will Regan was selected on December 14, 2012.
The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during the week's competition. The winners are selected by a group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
The Bulls host Manhattan this Saturday at 2:00 pm in the team's Ramada Worldwide Bracketbusters game at Alumni Arena.
