BUFFALO, NY – Mitchell Watt has been selected to play in the Portsmouth Invitational. The games will be played April 11-14 and feature 64 of the best college basketball players (seniors) from across the nation. The four-day, 12-game tournament played in Portsmouth, VA will be attended by representatives from every NBA team.
"There are a lot of seniors leaving college basketball this year and to be considered one of the best is a great honor," Watt said. "The possibility to showcase my talents and skills in front of so many professional scouts and GMs is a really neat opportunity. I'm looking at it as a launch pad for my future. I'm really getting prepared and working out, because I want to be at my best when I go down there."
Watt is coming off an impressive performance at the Reese's College All-Star game played in New Orleans on March 30. The Goodyear, AZ native had 11 points, four rebounds, three assists, three blocks and two steals in 22 minutes of action.
Watt, who was named the MAC Player of the Year, averaged 16.3 points, 7.5 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 2.2 blocked shots per game – all career highs. He ranked in the top four in the conference in five different categories, including scoring (3rd), rebounding (4th), field goal percentage (3rd), blocked shots (2nd) and defensive rebounds (3rd).
Watt is just the second UB player selected to play at Portsmouth in the 60-year history of the event. Turner Battle played in the event in 2005. 98 Portsmouth Invitational invitees have gone on to play in the NBA over the last 10 years.
Watt is one of three players from the Mid-American Conference in the 64-player field, joining Jarrod Jones from Ball State and Julian Mavunga from Miami (OH).
