ATHENS, GA – The University at Buffalo softball team fell in its two games at the Georgia Softball Classic on Saturday, losing 8-3 to Western Illinois and 8-0 to nationally-ranked Georgia. The Bulls conclude action in Athens tomorrow morning.
In the opener, UB ran into some offensive struggles as it did not record a hit until the seventh inning. The Leathernecks got on the board in the top of the second inning on a two-run home run off of starter Holly Johnson. Western Illinois added another two runs in the top of the fourth and a single run in the fifth. The Bulls finally got on the board in the bottom of the sixth, despite not recording a hit. Freshman Nora McGuire walked with one out and was replaced on first base by Karly Nevez. She moved to second and came in to score following an error by the WIU second baseman.
The Leathernecks added three runs in the top of the seventh and the Bulls responded with two of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Junior Alyssa Ward broke the no hitter with a leadoff single to second base. She moved to second following a single from Caitlin Dekker and both moved up on a sacrifice bunt. Both runs came in to score on a single from sophomore Rebecca Griswold, who recorded her first hit of the season.
Johnson picked up the loss as she pitched 3.1 innings, allowing four earned runs. Tori Speckman came on in relief to pitch 3.2 innings, striking out six and allowing one earned run.
In the second game, UB hung tight with the host Bulldogs early on. The Bulls recorded a one-out single in the top of the first, but were unable to get anything else going. Georgia got on the board in the bottom half of the inning on a solo home run. Buffalo again put runners on base in the second inning as freshman Alexis Curtiss led off with a single to left field, however she was erased on a double play.
The Bulls then recorded a scoreless bottom of the second, but Georgia hit a three-run home run to take a 4-0 lead. The Bulldogs tacked on another four runs in the bottom of the fourth and the Bulls were unable to score in the fifth, which ended the game.
Speckman recorded the loss as she pitched 3.2 innings, allowing six runs. Senior Haylee Land came in and pitched the final 0.2 innings of the game.
The Bulls will conclude play at the Georgia Softball Classic tomorrow at 11:00 am when they face Connecticut.
