Bulls Conclude First Day Of Play In New York City

QUEENS, NY – The University at Buffalo women's tennis team finished its first day of play at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center Women's Collegiate Invitational with success in both singles and doubles.
In the "A" Singles Bracket sophomore transfer Tanvi Shah defeated the third-seeded competitor Misia Krasowski from Brown, 1-6, 6-4, 11-9. Shah now moves on to the quarterfinals where she will face Erina Kikuchi from Boston College.
In the "C" Singles Bracket Marta Stoyanova dropped her first round match to Katherine Flanigan from Princeton, 6-3, 6-1. Junior Kira Golenko won her opening match in the "D" Singles Bracket, defeating Sharissa Ryan from Fairfield, 6-2, 6-2. Sophomore Miranda Podlas dropped a close match in the "E" Singles Bracket with a 6-2, 6-7 (5), 10-7 loss to Taylor Hollander from Binghamton. The Bulls dropped opening match in both the "F" and "G" Singles Brackets, sending both Tamara Markovic and Anamarie Candanoza to the consolation bracket.
In doubles action, Shah and Stoyanova picked up a big opening round victory against Hannah Morrill and Kelly Whelan from Harvard, 8-5. Shah and Stoyanova fell in the quarterfinals, 8-5, sending them in the consolation bracket of the "A" Doubles Flight.
In the "B" Doubles Flight, Podlas and Candanoza dropped their opening match in the Round of 16, moving in to the consolation bracket where the lost a tight 9-8 (6) match against Missy Edelblum and Jillian Santos from Binghamton.
In the "D" Doubles flight, Golenko and Markovic were seeded number one and didn't disappoint, winning their first match against Alyssa Gleason and Larraine Saaverda from Army, 8-5. In the quarterfinals, they defeated Michelle Green and Sasinin Satreethai from Rutgers with a 8-0 sweep. Markovic and Golenko have moved into tomorrow's semifinal where they will face Susita Das and Alia Nour from Charleston Southern.
Action will continue tomorrow with two rounds of singles and one round of doubles. Championship matches will take place on Monday.
