Bulls Sweep Bonnies in Home Opener

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo softball team opened their home schedule with an impressive sweep of St. Bonaventure this afternoon, blanking the Bonnies, 7-0, in game one, and taking the nightcap 12-7. Terese Diaz pitched a no-hitter in game one, to earn her first shutout of the season, while Jessica Griffin led the team offensively with five hits, including six RBIs and two home runs.

In game one, the Bulls scored a quick pair of runs in the bottom of the first and never looked back, as Kristin Waldron started off the inning with a triple and was sent home on a single from Griffin. Alyssa Wardadded an RBI single in the first inning to give the Bulls the early lead. In the bottom of the third, with Waldron on base, Griffin slammed a two-run home run over the left field fence to increase the lead. The Bulls scored three more insurance runs in the bottom of the fourth withCandice Sheehan and Waldron each earning RBIs as the Bulls were able to capitalize on two St. Bonaventure errors. Waldron had three hits and one RBI in game one, while Griffin finished the game with two hits and three RBIs.

Diaz pitched the complete game, earning her first career no-hitter, striking out 16 batters in seven innings of work. The 16 strikeouts marks a new school record for most strikeouts in a game, with the previous record being 12.
In game two, Waldron, Griffin, Ward and Alex Bejarano all hit home runs, as the Bulls scored in every inning except the fifth to take the game 12-7. Waldron, Griffin and Ward each earned three RBIs. Griffin hit her second home run of the day in the bottom of the first and a five-run second inning gave the Bulls a comfortable lead. Bejarano hit her first home run of the season in the top of the third to continue the Buffalo rally and a string of hits from Ashley Bertot, Griffin and Sharon Barr, including a home run from Waldron, put together a three-run fourth inning for Buffalo. The Bonnies put the pressure on, scoring seven runs between the fourth and sixth innings, but the Bulls held on for the sweep.

Barr earned the win, holding the Bonnies to three hits in 4.1 innings pitched, while striking out three batters. Diaz came in as relief, pitching the final 2.2 innings to earn the save, striking out four batters.
The Bulls host MAC rivals Ball State and Miami this weekend. The weekend kicks off with a doubleheader against Ball State on Friday, April 16. First pitch is set for 1:00 pm.
