Bulls Conclude Play At National Tennis Center Invite

FLUSHING MEADOWS, NY – The University at Buffalo women's tennis team took four of its top players to the National Tennis Center Invite this past weekend, played at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, NY, home of the US Open.
Junior Aleksandra Petrova (Sofia, Bulgaria/Logos International)had the best performance for the Bulls as she reached the semifinals before falling to the top seed in the "C" Flight. Petrova met the fourth seed in the first round as she defeated Misia Krasowski of Brown, 6-4, 4-6, 10-8. In the quarterfinals she defeated Eliza Matache of Columbia, 6-0, 6-1. Petrova finally fell to the number one seed Stephanie Kent of Cornell, 6-0, 6-0.
Freshman Tamara Markovic (Uzice, Serbia/Uzicka Gimnazija) won her first match in the "E" Flight as she defeated Julianna Rodin of Penn, 7-5, 6-4. Markovic fell in her quarterfinals match to Tana Illova of NC State before winning in her consolation match against Nakita Austin of St. John's, 6-4, 6-4.
In the "A" Flight, senior Denise Harijanto (Jakarta, Indonesia) fell in her opening match to Melissa Saiontz of Princeton and then moved into the consolation bracket where she won her first match against Emily Harman of Syracuse, 6-0, 6-3. Harijanto dropped her consolation quarterfinal match to Kristin Norton of Harvard, 7-6 (2), 4-6, 10-4.
Junior Diana Popescu (Alexandria, Romania/AL. I. Cuza) played in the "B" Flight where she lost in her opening match to the number one seed Casey Herzberg of Brown, 6-3, 6-2. Popescu moved into the consolation round where she won her first match against Jillian Santos of Binghamton, 1-6, 7-5, 10-8. Popescu fell in her consolation quarterfinals match to Christina Ordway of Cornell.
In the "A" Doubles Flight, UB's top team of Harijanto and Popescu fell in their opening match to Alex Kelleher and Olga Khymlev of Boston College. The duo advanced in the consolation first round as their opponents pulled out due to injury and then fell in the consolation quarterfinals to Kristin Beehler and Anne Houghton of Army.
In the "B" Doubles Flight, the team of Petrova and Markovic won their first match as they defeated Courtney Kilarski and Elizabeth Verow of Seton Hall, 8-2. The two fell in their quarterfinals match to Elmine Botes and Julia Korshunova of Fairleigh Dickinson and then won their consolation quarterfinal match against Christine Ordoway and Leah Seyburn of Cornell, 8-4.
The Bulls are back in action on Oct. 23 as they travel to the ITA Regionals.
