Bulls Set Personal Records & Win Events at Cardinal Classic on Saturday

ROCHESTER, NY - The University at Buffalo track and field program competed at the St. John Fisher Cardinal Classic in Rochester on Saturday. The Bulls won four events at the local meet, while many freshmen and sophomores gained outdoor competition experience.
JUMPS
The Bulls continued their momentum in the jumping events, winning three throughout the day while setting a few season-best and personal record marks.
Freshman Ryan Cardichon won the men's high jump with a mark of 1.94 meters. The Bulls had three more jumpers finish inside the top six. Tyler Norton and Calvin Finger both had a mark of 1.91 meters to take fourth and fifth place, with Daniel Richardson following in sixth with a jump of 1.81 meters. Norton's mark was a season-best.
Adriana Ellsworth won the women's high jump with a mark of 1.65 meters. The sophomore was shy of her record in the event (1.71m).
Amari Hall won the third jumping event of the day for the Bulls, taking the women's triple jump with a mark of 11.32 meters. The mark was a season-best for the sophomore.
Justin Kleppel set a new outdoor personal record in the men's long jump with a mark of 6.86 meters. Kleppel took third in the event with 38 competitors. Micah Blair trailed in fourth with the same mark as Kleppel (6.86m), facing less wind than Kleppel's jump. Daniel Muccini also posted a top 10 finish, taking eighth with a jump of 6.60 meters.
SPRINTS
The Bulls had several top 10 finishes in the sprinting events.
The Buffalo men placed second of 16 teams in the 4x100-meter relay. Rylee VanAlstine, Jack Faldetta, Sam Mellinger and Kleppel ran a season-best time for the Bulls of 42.17.
Faldetta (3rd, 11.07) and Jermaine Ewers (4th, 11.14) earned top five finishes in the 100-meter finals. Faldetta (6th, 11.09) and Ewers (8th, 11.12) qualified for the finals event by placing inside the top eight in the preliminary round. On the women's side of the 100-meter dash, Alexia Jones placed 16th with a time of 12.99.
Freshmen Jayne Williams (4th, 1:00.76) and Alexis Grijalva (5th, 1:00.96) earned top five finishes in the women's 400-meter field of 41. Meghana Reddy also made her outdoor event debut for the Bulls, placing 14th (1:02.50).
Williams later earned eighth place in the women's 200-meter field of 62 with a time of 26.39. Grijalva finished 17th with a time of 27.00.
Lindy Betrus placed eighth in the women's 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:06.62.
Fernando Sanchez finished fourth of 67 runners in the men's 400-meter with a time of 49.41. Sanchez was less than a second shy of his outdoor personal record (48.57).
DISTANCE
The Bulls had several freshmen shine in the distance events, setting new personal records and posting top 10 finishes.
Freshman Sophie Brettholtz set a new personal record of 4:46.79 to place second of 86 runners in the 1,500-meter. Lacey Danilovitz (10th, 4:53.43), Eliza Medearis (13th, 4:56.94), Hannah Sullivan (19th, 5:00.34) and Katie Edinger (20th, 5:01.19) all posted top 20 placements. Danilovitz, Medearis and Sullivan's times were all personal records.
Brettholtz later finished 10th of 87 runners in the women's 800-meter with a time of 2:22.66. Delaney Mansfield finished inside the top 15 too, posting a time of 2:24.47.
On the men's side of the 800-meter, freshmen Vincent Guaresimo (8th, 1:56.32) and Kevin Sherry (7th, 1:56.46) earned top 10 finishes in the men's 800-meter at the Cardinal Classic. Both were personal record times for the freshmen.
Gabriel Cornfield finished fourth of 105 runners in the men's 1,500-meter with a time of 4:01.29. Freshman Hayden Parks also posted a top 30 finish for the Bulls, placing 28th with a time of 4:09.70.
Paris Welker (3rd, 38:48.02), Leslie Villafuerte Castro (4th, 39:26.28) and Chloe Freeland (5th, 40:53.26) all earned top five finishes in the women's 10,000-meter. Welker's time is a new personal record that fell within two minutes of the all-time UB top 10 (37:12.64).
Brianna Carter placed sixth of 17 runners in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:46.10.
Brianna Urban placed ninth in the women's 5,000-meter with a new outdoor personal record time of 18:49.47. Alexandra Cowley posted an outdoor personal best of 18:56.29 to place 11th. Freshman Samantha Moury rounded out the Bulls competitors, finishing 32nd (20:27.01). Nicholas Hockenbury competed in the men's 5,000-meter, taking 28th with a new personal record time of 16:30.19.
THROWS
The Bulls had success in the throwing events throughout the entire day.
Maria Akalonu began the morning by placing third of 43 competitors in the women's discus throw with a mark of 39.68 meters. Akalonu was just shy of her personal record in the event (40.04m).
Bryson Bodner posted a new personal record in the men's discus with a throw of 38.40 meters. Bodner surpassed his previous record of 37.17 set at the UB Alumni Invite.
Loretta White placed eighth in the women's hammer throw with a mark of 46.48 meters. Faith Hamilton also competed for the Bulls, finishing 14th with a throw of 41.98 meters. Hamilton was just over a meter shy of her personal record (42.99m). On the men's side of the hammer throw, Kenneth Gulloso finished in sixth place of 41 throwers with a mark of 50.82 meters. Michael Dearie earned 15th place with a new personal best throw of 46.16 meters.
Bernice Balk won the women's shot put with a throw of 12.44 meters. Balk was just shy of her personal record mark of 12.46 meters.
Bodner (5th, 14.72m) and Quintus Simmons (7th, 14.30m) earned top 10 finishes in the men's shot put at the Cardinal Classic. Simmons mark was a new personal record. Bodner tied his record set earlier in the season.
