BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo track and field program is headed to Columbus, Ohio to compete in its final meet of the outdoor regular season, the Ohio State Jesse Owens Classic. The Bulls are scheduled to begin the action on Friday at noon and then resume on Saturday at 10:30 am.
The Bulls head to Ohio State just two weeks away from Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships, hosted by Ohio University from May 15th through May 17th. The program is sending several athletes to the Jesse Owens Classic that rank inside the top 10 of their event in the MAC this season, as well as members of the women's high jump group that rank top five nationally.
Zahra Amos, Stella Kapp, Adriana Ellsworth and Isa van Puffelen are all expected to compete in the women's high jump on Saturday. Amos sits atop the conference with teammate Akuot Kuany for the best mark in the event this season, reaching 1.78 meters. The duo is tied for third in UB outdoor history too. Kapp slots in at seventh on the conference outdoor leaderboard (1.73m), with Ellsworth at ninth (1.71m). van Puffelen's season-best mark of 1.63 meters at the Bison Outdoor Classic ranks just outside the UB outdoor top ten (1.68m).
Aiden Walker is scheduled to compete in the men's discus throw at Ohio State on Saturday. The junior ranks first in the MAC in the event this season, posting a school-record mark of 57.26 meters at the Geneseo Early Season Invitational. Walker is also expected to compete in the men's shot put at Ohio State, an event in which he ranks ninth in the conference (15.55m).
Kara Moran is expected to compete in the women's long jump on Friday and the triple jump on Saturday. The sophomore sits within the MAC top 10 for both events, ranking fifth in the triple jump (12.47m) and the long jump (5.95m). Both marks joined the program's outdoor leaderboard. Moran will be joined by van Puffelen, Uma Bhattacharjee and Shannon Schmieder in Friday's long jump. Linnea Neureuther is expected to compete alongside the sophomore on Saturday in the triple jump, ranking seventh in the conference this season as a freshman (12.23m). Amari Hall and Melissa Carden are scheduled to compete in the triple jump too.
Luke Stoeffler enters this week's meet with momentum, setting a new school record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (8:58.22) at the Penn Relays last Thursday. Stoeffler surpassed his previous school record of 9:02.16, set earlier in the outdoor season at the Raleigh Relays. The junior is the only runner in school history to break the nine-minute mark in the event. Stoeffler is set to compete in the 5,000-meter this Friday night at Ohio State.
Sophia Sampson is scheduled to compete in the women's 200-meter on Friday. Sampson joined the Bulls' all-time outdoor ranks just a few weeks ago with a time of 24.50 to take the fourth spot on the UB leaderboard. Schmieder, Stephney Pryce and Hailey Martinez are expected to compete alongside Sampson, all three falling within half a second of the all-time UB outdoor top ten (24.77).
Aidan Norris is expected to compete in the men's 800-meter on Saturday afternoon. The freshman joined the Bulls' all-time ranks with a time of 1:49.50 to rank fourth in program history at the UB Alumni Invitational. Norris also ranks third on the MAC leaderboard.
