Zahra Amos Sets High Jump School Record At SPIRE Collegiate Indoor Games

GENEVA, OHIO – The University at Buffalo track and field team had a strong performance at the SPIRE Collegiate Indoor Games on Saturday, winning events across the board.
JUMPS
Zahra Amos was the highlight of the meet for the Bulls, setting a new school record in the high jump with a mark of 1.80 meters. Amos' jump beats her previous best by six centimeters, now ranking first in the Mid-American Conference and 30th across the NCAA.
In the triple jump, Emily Tait took first place with a mark of 11.55 meters. Freshman Kara Moran followed, taking second place for the Bulls with a mark of 11.43 meters. Moran also finished fifth in the long jump with a jump of 5.65 meters, a new personal best.
On the men's side, Freshman Manuel Sepulveda won the men's triple jump with a collegiate best of 14.33 meters, ranking fifth in the MAC. Freshman Tyler Norton was also impressive in the men's high jump with a jump of 1.93 meters, a personal best as well, ranking eighth in the MAC. Brian Murphy rounded out the men's performance with a personal best of 4.70 meters. Murphy's personal best ranks sixth in the MAC.
THROWS
The Bulls throwing performance was highlighted by five new personal bests and three podium finishes.
Caleb Nickens won the men's weight throw with a mark of 19.67 meters, a new personal best that moves the graduate student to third all-time in UB indoor history and third in the MAC. Jonathan Surdej placed second in the shot put with a throw of 17.19 meters, but still atop the MAC in the event.
Imahni Sinclair placed third in the women's weight throw with a mark of 17.45 meters, setting a new personal best. Loretta White was not far behind Sinclair, also setting a new personal best with a throw of 16.51 meters. Bernice Balk placed ninth in the women's shot put with a throw of 12.93 meters, another personal best for a Buffalo thrower.
TRACK
On the track, freshman Julia Singh won the women's 600 meter with a personal best of 1:37.48, joining the school's record books, ranking ninth all-time in indoor history.
Scilla Benussi continued her outstanding season with a personal best in the 60 meter hurdles, placing forth in the finals with a time of 8.82. Stephney Pryce also ran a personal best for the Bulls, completing the 400 meter with a time of 58.91. Alexandra Cowley was the next Buffalo runner to earn a personal best time, with a 5:24.92 mile.
Anna Recktenwalt (10:37.63) and Kaitlyn Edinger (10:50.65) both ran indoor personal bests in the women's 3000 meter.
Brandon Robinson placed eighth in a field of 85 runners in the 200 meter, running a personal best of 22.32. Noah Brightman also had a personal best in the 3000 meter, with a time of 8:33.12.
"This weekend was a focus competition for the team to improve our competitive levels, improve our rankings in the MAC, and prepare for the competition we will see at the MAC Championships," said Head Coach Vicki Mitchell. "The women set four new all-time top ten marks for the program and one new school record, while the men set eight new all-time top ten marks and two new school records. The team continues to improve each and with just under two weeks to the MAC Championships, the grind will continue with a focus on staying healthy and being ready to get after it at Eastern Michigan University."

The Bulls will compete next weekend at Cornell University on Saturday, February 17th, the team's last meet before the MAC Indoor Championships on February 23rd and 24th.
