Bulls Win 23 Events on Friday at UB Alumni Invitational

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo track and field program held the annual UB Alumni Invitational on Friday evening at UB Stadium, hosting six local collegiate programs. The Bulls put on a show for the home crowd, winning 23 events and posting five performances that reached the all-time program record book.
SPRINTS
The Bulls won the women's 4x100-meter relay to open the sprinting events on the track. The team of Uma Bhattacharjee, Amber McDonald, Sophia Sampson and Hailey Martinez set a season-best time of 46.74. The Bulls also took third in the event, with a team of Stephney Pryce, Shannon Schmieder, Gemma Galligani and Alexia Jones finishing with a time of 49.97.
McDonald doubled back to win the women's 100-meter dash with a time of 12.45. The sophomore was just over two-tenths of a second shy of her season-best time (12.22). Schmieder (6th, 12.63), Pryce (7th, 12.76) and Kara Moran (10th, 12.89) all posted top 10 finishes. Schmieder's time was a new personal record.
Sampson won the women's 200-meter with a time of 24.70. Sampson was two-tenths of a second shy of her personal best that ranks fourth in UB outdoor history (24.50). The Bulls took the top three spots, with Bhattacharjee taking second (25.08) and Pryce in third (25.14). Galligani also earned a top 10 finish with a time of 26.04.
On the men's side, Rylee VanAlstine won the 200-meter with a time of 21.99. The freshman missed the UB outdoor top 10 by less than half a second (21.51).
VanAlstine doubled back to join the all-time UB outdoor record book with a time of 48.16 and win the 400-meter. VanAlstine's time ties Mike Commisso for 10th who set his personal record in 2001. Fernando Sanchez posted a close second-place time of 48.88, just over three-tenths of a second shy of his personal record in the event (48.57).
Linnea Neureuther won the women's 400-meter with a time of 57.21 seconds. The freshman was less than a second shy of reaching the all-time UB outdoor top 10 (56.25). Juliette Salazar (2nd, 57.33), Martinez (3rd, 58.10), Jayne Williams (4th, 58.68) and Alexis Grijalva (6th, 1:00.34) put five Bulls inside the top six finishers. Williams' time was a personal record.
Jack Faldetta finished second in the men's 100-meter with a time of 11.11. Justin Kleppel placed second in the event with a time of 11.19 seconds.
Freshman Lindy Betrus won the women's 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:04.97. Melissa Carden also competed for the Bulls, placing fifth with a time of 1:06.90.
The Buffalo women won the 4x400-meter relay to close out the night for the Bulls. Williams, Grijalva, Carden and Betrus finished the event with a time of 4:01.55.
DISTANCE
Allison Newton won the women's 1,500-meter with a time of 4:42.10, falling just shy of her personal record in the event (4:40.44). Rachel Hirschkind placed third with a season-best time of 4:47.35. Sophie Brettholtz (7th, 4:53.60), Delaney Mansfield (8th, 4:56.07), Lacey Danilovitz (9th, 4:56.82) and Ella Reilly (10th, 4:58.14) gave the Bulls six of the top 10 spots In the event. Mansfield, Danilovitz and Reilly's time were all personal records. Chloe Freeland (15th, 5:02.95), Paris Welker (16th, 5:02.95) and Hannah Sullivan (17th, 5:05.89) all set personal records too.
The Bulls earned five of the top six spots in the men's 1,500-meter. Luke Stoeffler won the event for the Bulls with a time of 3:53.53. Stoeffler was less than three seconds shy of reaching the all-time UB outdoor top 10 (3:50.86). Vincent Guaresimo took second (3:55.74), with Collin Stafford in third (3:55.89), Kevin Sherry in fifth (3:59.86) and Gabriel Cornfield taking sixth (4:00.05). Freshman Connor Domoy set a personal record in the event (4:06.55).
Aidan Norris won the men's 800-meter with a time of 1:49.50, a new personal best that ranks fourth in UB outdoor history. Norris beat his previous best by nearly four seconds (1:53.22). Collin Stafford also posted a top-five finish for the Bulls with a time of 1:56.14.
Bronagh Cassidy won the women's 800-meter with a time of 2:17.37. Newton finished second to Cassidy (2:18.88). The two were within six seconds of the UB outdoor top-10 (2:12.26). Brettholtz (5th, 2:22.40) put a third Buffalo runner inside the top five, setting a new personal record in the event. Freeland was the fourth runner to place inside the top 10 for the Bulls with a time of 2:26.25.
Jacob Brink won the men's 5,000-meter with a time of 14:39.28. Brink's time was a new personal record. Sean O'Brien (7th, 15:23.87) and Hayden Parks (9th, 15:30.86) posted top-10 finishes.
The Bulls had four runners place inside the top-10 of the women's 5,000-meter. Megan Smith placed sixth (18:52.36), Brianna Urban finished seventh (18:55.91) with a personal record time, Katie Edinger took eighth (18:57.60) and Alexandra Cowley placed 10th (19:21.62).
JUMPS
Freshman Akuot Kuany set a new personal record in the women's high jump with a mark of 1.78 meters to tie Zahra Amos for the third-ranked mark in UB outdoor history. Stella Kapp finished second, clearing the 1.70 mark to finish second. Amos (3rd, 1.65m) and Krista Perry (6th, 1.55m) also competed for the Bulls.
Neureuther made her mark on the night by winning the women's triple jump with a mark of 12.23 meters. The freshman's first-place finish was her second of the evening and the mark entered the all-time ranks to take eighth in UB outdoor history. Amari Hall placed second to Neureuther with a new personal record mark of 11.25 meters. Carden took third with a mark of 11.02 meters.
Calvin Finger won the men's high jump with a mark of 1.98 meters. The Bulls took the top four spots in the event, with Ryan Cardichon (2nd, 1.95m), Daniel Richardson (3rd, 1.95m) and Tyler Norton (4th, 1.90m) all competing for the Bulls. Richardson's mark was a new personal record.
Moran continued the Bulls' jumping momentum, winning the women's long jump with a new personal record mark of 5.95 meters. Moran's mark remains at fifth in the all-time UB outdoor ranks, surpassing her previous best of 5.86 meters. Isa van Puffelen placed second with a mark of 5.56 meters.
The Bulls took four of the top five spots in the men's long jump. Freshman Micah Blair won the event for the Bulls with a mark of 6.86 meters, followed by Justin Kleppel (6.78m) and Kevin Gabalski (6.64m) who posted season-best marks. Daniel Muccini rounded out Buffalo's competitors in fifth (6.61m).
THROWS
Stella Kapp began the day with a win in the women's javelin throw, starting the meet with momentum for the Bulls. The freshman's mark of 33.12 meters was just over two meters shy of her personal record in the event (35.43m).
Bernice Balk posted a season-best mark of 12.46 meters to win the women's shot put. Freshman Maria Akalonu earned second place for the Bulls too with a throw of 11.77 meters. On the men's side, the Bulls took three of the top five spots. Bryson Bodner earned second (14.19m), Quintus Simmons took third (14.12m) and Aiden Walker finished fourth (13.89m).
Walker won the discus throw with a mark of 53.82 meters. On the women's side, Akalonu won the event with a throw of 39.05 meters. Balk placed second to Akalonu with a mark of 34.07 meters.
Loretta White won the women's hammer throw with a new personal record mark of 49.44 meters. Faith Hamilton was third in the event with a new personal best too of 42.99 meters. On the men's side, Kenneth Gulloso won the event with another personal record of 53.20 meters. The junior remained eighth in program outdoor history. Freshman Michael Dearie placed fourth in the event, with a throw of 45.14 meters, just shy of his personal record (45.17m).
