BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo track and field program continues the outdoor season this week, participating in three meets across three states. The Bulls are competing at the University of Pennsylvania Relays, the University of Central Florida Knight Invite and the St. John Fisher Cardinal Classic.
Matt Gensel, Rachel Hirschkind and Luke Stoeffler are scheduled to compete on Thursday at the opening night of the 129th Penn Relays. Hirschkind will open the week of competition for the Bulls at 7:05 pm in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase. The graduate transfer ranks fourth in program history in the event with a time of 10:47.01 set at the Bison Outdoor Classic just two weeks ago.
Stoeffler is scheduled to follow at 7:35 pm, competing in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase. The junior posted a new school record of 9:02.16 at the NC State Raleigh Relays in the second week of the outdoor season.
Gensel rose the Bulls' all-time outdoor ranks in Raleigh too, setting a new personal record in the 10,000-meter with a time of 29:49.34. The junior is expected to compete in the event at the Penn Relays at 10 pm.
The Bulls are sending another group to the UCF Knight Invite to compete on Friday and Saturday. The group features student-athletes who compete in sprints, jumps, middle distance and throws.
Kara Moran is set to begin the competition for the Bulls on Friday afternoon in Florida, participating in the women's long jump at 1 pm. Last week at the UB Alumni Invite, the sophomore set a new personal record of 5.95 meters to rise to fifth in UB outdoor history.
Freshmen Sophia Sampson, Shannon Schmieder, Hailey Martinez and sophomore Uma Bhattacharjee are scheduled to compete on Friday in the women's 200-meter. The Bulls' young sprinters have had a strong start to the season, most recently highlighted by Sampson who joined the 100-meter (11.95) and 200-meter (24.50) all-time ranks. The Bulls sprinters will also compete in the 100-meter, 4x100-meter relay and 4x400-meter on Saturday.
Linnea Neureuther is another freshman making her mark on UB outdoor history, joining the program ranks in the 400-meter (1:01.34) and the triple jump (12.23m) in the past two weeks. Neureuther will be joined by Gemma Galligani and Isa van Puffelen in the 400-meter on Friday.
Aiden Walker, the school record holder in the men's discus throw, is scheduled to compete in the event on Saturday at 10 am. Walker set the program's record at the Geneseo Invite with a mark of 57.26 meters, surpassing Matt Gac's long-standing school record of 56.39 meters set in 2010.
Zahra Amos, Akuot Kuany and Stella Kapp are slated to compete in the women's high jump at the Knight Invite. The Buffalo women's high jumpers have been a sight to see this season, sitting at third in the NCAA national leaderboards in the event squad ranks with a cumulative mark of 7.00 meters. Kuany most recently set a new personal record of 1.78 meters at the UB Alumni Invitational on Friday night, tying Amos for the third-ranked mark in program history.
The Bulls will also compete at the St. John Fisher Cardinal Classic on Saturday. The action in Rochester is scheduled to begin at 9 am. The program shined at the Cardinal Classic a year ago, winning 12 events. The Bulls head down the road to Rochester with a young core of student-athletes, looking to continue their momentum from Friday's UB Alumni Invite where the program won 23 events.
