MUNCIE, IN – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team (8-1-3, 3-1-1 MAC) played to a scoreless draw with the Ball State Cardinals at the Briner Sports Complex on Sunday afternoon.
The result is the second straight shutout and eighth overall for the UB backline this season.
The Bulls were the aggressors early on as Jasmine Guerber got her foot on a couple of attempts in the opening minutes of play, but Grace Konopatzki made a pair of saves for the Cardinals.
Sophomore Lexie Thompson saw her first action of the game in the eighth minute as Delany Caldwell got behind the UB backline and ripped a shot from point blank range that Thompson stopped and then Caldwell got her head on the rebound but Thompson made another great save to escape the threat.
The Bulls had two looks late in the half as Maya Ikewood found space and drilled a shot, but it sailed high and wide of target, and then Laiken Kiser got the ball at the top of the box and got a shot off as she was falling down but didn't quite get all of it as Konopatzki was there for the stop and the game remained scoreless at the half.
UB had a great scoring opportunity in the 54th minute as they drew a foul and Kelly Severini took the ensuing free kick from the top of the box and clanged a ball off the right post and then Sarah Woods charged in for the rebound but her shot attempt missed wide right.
Later in the 59th minute, Olivia Bizzoni took space and drilled a shot in stride, but it just missed left of target. Then in the 63rd minute, Guerber received a through ball at the top right corner of the box and fired, but her attempt sailed high.
The Cardinals found themselves on a breakaway in the 67th minute as Tori Monaco flew up field and got behind the UB backline but Thompson came out to make a fantastic sliding save to knock the ball out of play. The hosts had another opportunity in transition 10 minutes later, but the shot attempt flew high over the crossbar.
In the 85th minute, Ellie Simmons took a corner and played a ball into the box that got knocked out to the feet of Guerber but Konopatzki met her at the ball to make the stop and the teams then traded possession over the final minutes of play as the game ended in a draw.
UB outshot the Cardinals 19-11 on the day, while the teams were even in shots on goal and corner kick opportunities. Thompson finished with six saves in her eighth shutout of the season while Konopatzki made five stops for the Cardinals. Simmons was named Player of the Game by the UB coaching staff for her complete game effort.
"We talked about finding a way to win on the road on Sundays," said head coach Shawn Burke. "This game was there for the taking, but it wasn't our day. We will do a better job as a staff getting them ready for Thursday."
Up next, Buffalo returns to UB Stadium to host Toledo on Thursday, October 10 at 6pm.
