BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team (9-1-3, 4-1-1 MAC) put forth a dominant effort in a 2-0 win over Toledo at UB Stadium on Thursday night.
It is the third straight shutout and ninth overall for the Bulls this season.
After not much action in the early going, the Bulls had their first good look of the game in the 15th minute as Olivia Bizzoni played a ball to Kelly Severini who had her shot blocked and then Sarah Woods was in the right position but didn't get all of the rebound attempt.
The Rockets then went on the offensive as Brooklyn Whitehead broke free and fired on goal, but Lexie Thompson made a great sliding save. Later, Olivia Dault rifled a pair of shot attempts from outside the box but both sailed high and out of play.
Buffalo got things going again 10 minutes later as Bizzoni played a great ball to Jasmine Guerber who shot from inside the box, but Agnes Stenlund made the save. UB had their best scoring chance of the half in the 40th minute as Guerber fed Woods out wide and she played a perfect ball into the box to the head of Laiken Kiser, but Stenund met her in the air to make the save and the game remained scoreless at the half.
The Bulls continued to attack out of the locker room with a trio of shot opportunities in the opening minutes of the second half. In the 52nd minute, Maya Galko took a free kick and played a perfect ball to the head of Severini who got her head on the ball, but Stenlund made the save. Five minutes later, Galko took a corner kick and played another great ball into the box, this time to the head of Kaya Schultz whose header attempt sailed high.
UB finally broke through in the 58th minute as Severini found Woods down the right side and she played a perfect ball back to Severini who banged a shot into the back of the net to give the Bulls a 1-0 lead.
The Bulls continued to attack and were rewarded in the 78th minute as Kiser made a great run up field and drew a foul in the box and Ashley Reyes converted on the ensuing penalty kick to put UB up 2-0 and that would be more than enough to secure the victory.
Buffalo outshot Toledo 19-7 on the day, including a 7-2 advantage in shots on goal and a 9-1 edge in corner kick opportunities. Thompson made two saves while Stenlund made five stops for the Rockets. Gueber was named Player of the Game by the UB coaching staff.
"Really proud of the effort of the group tonight and their patience," said head coach Shawn Burke. "Toledo posed some different problems for us, and I thought the group did a really good job of staying patient and solving it. It was a good collective effort with a lot of people contributing in different ways, so just really proud of them tonight."
Up next, Buffalo travels to Bowling Green for a clash with the Falcons on Sunday at 1pm.
