BOWLING GREEN, OH – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team (9-1-4, 4-1-2 MAC) played to a 1-1 draw with Bowling Green at Cochrane Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
It was a possession battle in the early going before the Bulls had their first good look of the game in the 22nd minute as Arianna Zumpano received a pass at the top of the box and fired with her left foot but it sailed high, and then just seconds later, the Bulls forced a BGSU turnover and Jasmine Guerber got behind the backline and fired a shot across the box but it missed wide left.
Buffalo continued to attack as Olivia Bizzoni beat her defender and played a ball on net that Guerber flicked into the back of the net, but it was called offside. Less than a minute later, Guerber flicked a ball on to Kelly Severini who drilled a shot in stride, but Payton O'Malley made the save.
Later, UB created another turnover and Zumpano fired a low shot from inside the box, but O'Malley was there once again for the stop. In the 41st minute, Kaya Schultz dribbled through the defense and slid a pass through to Zumpano who fired a shot across the box but O'Malley reached to her left and made the save. A couple minutes later, Ashley Reyes found space and got a shot off, but it sailed high over the crossbar and the game remained scoreless at the break.
Offense was at a premium for most of the second half until the Bulls finally broke through in the 74th minute as Carolyn Hinkle took advantage of an O'Malley miscue and drilled a shot into the top right corner of the net to give the Bulls a 1-0 lead.
The Falcons answered less than two minutes later as Michelle Hochstadt played a ball into the box to the foot of Emily Hollar who fired on net and despite the Bulls attempting to clear it, the referee signaled the ball crossed the line for a goal to tie the game at one.
The Bulls looked to answer in the 83rd minute as Severini played a great ball into the box to the head of Guerber who unloaded a header attempt, but O'Malley made a fantastic save from point blank range and the game would end in a draw.
The Bulls dominated the stat sheet as they outshot the Falcons 14-3 on the night, including a 7-1 advantage in shots on goal and a 3-1 edge in corner kick opportunities. Schultz was named Player of the Game by the UB coaching staff.
"That was the best first half of soccer we've played all year," said head coach Shawn Burke. "Unfortunately, the game is 90 minutes. Definitely more positives than negatives, but tough to only be coming home with one point."
Up next, Buffalo returns home to host Kent State on Thursday, October 17 at 6pm.
