BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team battled to a scoreless draw with Bowling Green on a cold and rainy Senior Day at UB Stadium on Sunday afternoon. With the result, the Bulls improve to 6-3-6 overall and 3-2-3 in league play.
The Bulls were once again aggressive off the opening kickoff as UB drew a foul and Kaylin Ricci took the ensuing free kick, drilling a ball that sailed just high over the crossbar. Later, Sarah Woods played a great ball through the box that just missed the foot of Leah Wengender and then Woods found space and ripped a shot on goal that was saved by Lili Berg.
Bowling Green had their best look of the half in 33rd minute as Maya Dean made a good run and fired a shot in stride, but Rebecca Winslow made a great save.
UB had a scoring chance late in the half as freshman Eva Blatz ripped a shot on goal from the top of the box, but it clanged off the crossbar and the game remained scoreless at the half.
The Bulls appeared to have their first goal of the game in the 55th minute as Ellie Simmons played a great ball into the box and Blatz was there to finish it off but offsides was called and the goal was waived off.
The Falcons went on the attack in the 58th minute as Lizzie Bultynck ripped a shot across the box but Winslow made a spectacular diving save to knock the ball out of play and then, just a few minutes later, made another great save off a Dean shot from point blank range to escape the jam.
Back came the Bulls as Katie Krohn found space and drilled a shot that curled toward the top corner of the net but Madison Vukas made a good save. Wengender continued to attack as she made a pair of great runs in the 71st and 85th minutes and had good looks but Vukas made both saves.
Bowling Green looked to break through in the final minutes as with two scoring opportunities but Winslow and the UB backline came up big one more time to preserve the clean sheet.
The Falcons outshot the Bulls 12-8 with the two times equal with five shots on goal each. Winslow recorded the fourth shutout of her Buffalo career tying a season-best five saves while the UB backline earned their second straight clean sheet and seventh of the season. Winslow was named the Player of the Game by the UB coaching staff for her efforts in the win.
"That was a tough game," said head coach Shawn Burke. "That's a tough team to play against and the style they want to play so you have to rise to the occasion and battle, and they did. We are a team that likes to create a lot of chances and that didn't happen as much today, but I think to fight, battle and claw your way for a result is a positive and we'll take the point."
Up next, the Bulls remain home as they welcome Toledo to UB Stadium for a showdown under the lights on Thursday, October 19 at 6pm.
