ATHENS, OH – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team (8-1, 2-0 MAC) dominated on both sides of the ball from start to finish as they defeated Ohio 3-0 at Chessa Field on Sunday afternoon.
With their sixth straight shutout victory, the Bulls improve to 8-1 overall, the best start to a season since 1999. Additionally, the sixth straight shutouts are a Division I era program record.
Scoring chances were limited in the opening minutes of play with just one shot taken between the two teams in the opening 20 minutes of play. Buffalo's first shot of the game came in the 22nd minute as Ellie Simmons played a long ball up field to Jasmine Guerber who drew Celeste Sloma out of the net and fired a shot but it rolled just wide.
The Bulls got on the board in the 29th minute as Alya Ruken played a ball into the box and Annie Judasz came away with it and drilled a shot into the bottom corner of the net to put UB up 1-0.
Buffalo added to their lead 10 minutes later as Cashlin Copley played a beautiful through ball to Arianna Zumpano and she beat Sloma and fired a shot into the bottom right corner of net to give the Bulls a 2-0 lead.
The Bobcats started to attack late in the half and got off a pair of good shots but Emily Kelly and the UB defense turned them away. Buffalo had one more chance in the final minutes as Zumpano broke free in the box and fired a shot on net, but it sailed just wide, and the Bulls would maintain a two-goal lead at the break.
The wind really picked up at the start of the second half making it difficult for either team to create scoring opportunities. The Bobcats had a good look from just inside the box in the 67th minute, but Kelly was there for the save.
The Bulls added to their lead just a minute later as Judasz kept possession alive and slid a ball through to Zumpano who drilled a shot into the back of the net to put UB up 3-0 and that was all the insurance needed as UB allowed just four shots the entire second half.
The UB backline has not conceded a goal since August 28 at nationally ranked Rutgers. The Bulls outshot the Bobcats 14-6, including a 7-2 advantage in shots on goal. Kelly made two saves on the afternoon, while Sloma and Wexell combined for four stops for Ohio. Judasz was named Player of the Game by the UB coaches for her efforts in the shutout victory.
"This was a tremendous team effort today" said head coach Shawn Burke. "So many different players stepping up and putting together a complete 90 minutes. It's hard to win on the road on Sundays in this league and we just showed our quality."
Buffalo returns to action on Thursday, September 29 as they travel to Toledo for a showdown with the Rockets at 7pm.
