Bulls Travel to Toledo, Host Western Michigan This Week

BUFFALO, NY – After a dominant opening weekend of conference play, the University at Buffalo women's soccer team (8-1, 2-0 MAC) looks to continue their winning ways with a pair of games this weekend. The Bulls travel to Toledo for a clash with the Rockets on Thursday night before returning home to host Western Michigan at UB Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Sunday's game concludes homecoming weekend at UB and is also part of a week-long Mental Health Awareness campaign which will feature messaging from UB student-athletes and coaches.
On Thursday, Buffalo and Toledo will meet for the 28th time with the Bulls owning a narrow 13-12-2 series edge. The Bulls are 6-0-1 in the last seven meetings with the Rockets, most recently playing to a scoreless draw at UB Stadium last season.
On Sunday, it will be the 30th meeting between Buffalo and Western Michigan with the Bulls owning a slim 12-11-6 advantage. The Bulls defeated the Broncos 4-3 at UB Stadium a year ago.
Buffalo is coming off a great start to conference play as they picked up a pair of 3-0 shutout victories over Akron and at Ohio last week. The Bulls have now recorded a Division 1 era six straight shutouts and their 8-1 overall record is the best start to a season since 1999. They are ranked 31st in the latest RPI which is the highest in program history, besting the previous mark of 32nd set by the 2014 squad after they won the MAC Championship.
Sophomore forward Arianna Zumpano leads the Bulls with six goals. Fellow sophomore Jasmine Guerber has scored five goals, Katie Krohn has scored three and Leah Wengender and Annie Judasz have each netted a pair of goals. The Bulls lead the MAC in total goals (21), total points (70), scoring offense (2.33), total assists (28), assists per game (3.11), shots on goal per game (7.89), shutout percentage (.667) and goals against average (.444). Zumpano leads the league in total goals (6) and points (13), while ranking second in shots on goal per game (1.44). Guerber ranks fourth in total goals (5) and fifth in total points (11). Fifth year goalkeeper Emily Kelly leads the conference in shoutouts (6) and goals against average (0.45) and is third in save percentage (.846) while freshman Ellie Simmons is second in total assists (5) and assists per game (0.56).
Toledo enters Thursday's match with a 1-5-3 overall record after falling 2-0 at to Northern Illinois on Sunday. The Rockets are led offensively by graduate student forward Morgan Otteson who has recorded five goals while redshirt senior Aston Cassel and sophomore Mia Leoneti have recorded two goals each. Redshirt freshman Karson Hill leads Toledo between the pipes, compiling an 0-4-2 overall record with 43 saves, a .652 save percentage and a 3.47 goals against average over seven games.
Western Michigan enters the weekend with a 1-4-4 overall record after playing to a 2-2 draw against Bowling Green on Sunday. Senior forward Reagan Wisser leads the Broncos with three goals while Bria Telemaque has recorded two goals and an assist. In net, Western Michigan is led by graduate student Hannah Sargent who has made 38 saves and owns a 0.745 save percentage and a 1.67 goals against average in eight starts.
Following weekend play, the Bulls will travel to Oxford, Ohio for an afternoon matinee against the Miami (OH) RedHawks at 4pm.
