BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team (2-0) travels to Piscataway, NJ for a showdown against the Big Ten opponent Rutgers Scarlet Knights on Friday afternoon. It will be the second meeting between the two schools, the last coming in the historic 2000 season where the Bulls took Rutgers to overtime at UB Stadium before falling 2-1. The game will be streamed on B1G+ with Dom Savino (play-by-play) and Kristian Dyer (color) announcing.
The Bulls, ranked fifth in the first United Soccer Coaches Midwest Region weekly poll, are coming off a dominating performance over the weekend in which they defeated Binghamton 4-1 on Thursday before cruising to another 4-1 win over Niagara on Sunday night. Seven of UB's eight goals came in the second half.
It was a balanced offensive attack as four different Bulls found the scoresheet over two games. Senior Payton Robertson scored the equalizer in the 47th minute for UB's first goal of the season on Thursday before sophomore Jasmine Guerber scored a pair of goals in the 54th and 79th minutes to give UB the lead and sophomore Arianna Zumpano added an insurance goal to secure a 4-1 win over Binghamton in the opener. On Sunday against Niagara, Zumpano scored late in the first half to give the Bulls a one goal lead at the break. After Niagara tied the game, Guerber responded less than a minute later to put the Bulls on top and they would not look back as senior Leah Wengender scored her first goal of the season in the 72nd minute and Zumpano found the back of the net once again in the 81st minute to give UB their second straight 4-1 win to start the year.
Buffalo currently ranks first in the nation assists per game (6.0), fourth in points per game (14.0), sixth in scoring offense (4.0), seventh in assists (6.0), 14th in total points (28) and 23rd in total goals (8). Guerber and Zumpnao rank eighth in total goals (3) and fifth in goals per game (1.5), and Guerber's two game-winning goals is second-best in the nation, and she also ranks 11th in total points (7). Zumpano ranks 22nd with six total points while freshman Ellie Simmons ranks fourth with three total assists.
Rutgers enters Sunday's match with a 3-0 record after defeating New Mexico, UNLV and Providence, all on the road, to start the season. The Scarlet Knights are led by junior Allison Lowry who has scored two goals and added two assists. Sophomore Gia Girman has also added a pair of goals. Graduate student Meagan McClelland leads Rutgers between the pipes as she owns a 3-0 overall record with seven saves and a 0.35 goals against average on the year.
Next up, the Bulls return home to host crosstown rival Canisius on Thursday, September 1 at 7pm.
