PISCATAWAY, NJ – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team (2-1-0) scored first but came up just short as they ultimately fell 2-1 to third-ranked Rutgers at Yurcak Field on Sunday afternoon.
Rutgers controlled the possession early on, forcing UB's fifth year goalkeeper Emily Kelly to make a pair of tough saves in the opening minutes.
The UB backline settled, and the offense began to flow as Buffalo recorded their first shot of the game in the 11th minute off the foot of Cashlin Copley from just outside the box, but it sailed high and wide. The Bulls has another opportunity in the 27th minute as Jasmine Guerber broke free up field and found a teammate but the shot was blocked by the Rutgers' defense.
Buffalo broke through a few minutes later as Ellie Simmons played a beautiful ball up field to Guerber and she shook her defender and fired a shot into the bottom left corner of the net past a diving Meagan McClelland to give UB a 1-0 lead and that would be the score at the half.
The UB back line held Rutgers to seven total shots and just three on goal, all which Kelly stopped, in the opening half. UB's goal was just the second allowed by the Scarlet Knights this season.
Rutgers wasted no time to start the second half as they capitalized on a defensive breakdown for UB in the opening minute, drawing Kelly off her line and Riley Tiernan found the back of the net to tie game at one.
The Scarlet Knights added to their lead in the 55th minute as Allison Lowrey ripped a shot on net and Kelly made a fantastic save but Lowry was there for the rebound and put a shot into the top right corner of the net to give Rutgers a 2-1 lead and that would be enough to secure the victory as the Bulls' offense managed just two shots the rest of the game.
Kelly finished with five saves on the afternoon while sophomore Kaya Schultz was named Player of the Game by the UB coaches for her solid efforts coming off the bench and her calm demeanor throughout the game.
"Really proud of the collective team effort today," said head coach Shawn Burke. "We knew how hard today was going to be, but the players executed the game plan and gave themselves a chance. We didn't shy away from the moment and showed what we are capable of."
The Bulls return to action on Thursday, September 1 as they welcome crosstown rival Canisius to UB Stadium at 7pm.
